Bioshock 2 Audio Diary prop

Hi, I built this for the company who designed the game. I was hired to build four of these for a scavenger hunt conducted in Las Vegas last month. It had a small digital recorder inside that had a recording of where to look for the next clue to the hunt. The tape wheels were on a servo motor that was gutted so it became a gear motor. There was a circuit that was activated which turned on a red LED and began the wheels to turn until it timed out upon the end of the recorded message. It was a lot of fun. The only image I had to work off of was the one in the game. I had to design the entire thing on cad first and then work out the mechanism.

Enjoy.

Update: I'm not offering these, one of you talented people could very easily make this piece. I wouldn't doubt a fan out there would be doing his own by now that is all I thought. It's a great piece. Like the Iron Man chest piece. Once that came out everyone wanted to make their own. I even made a chest piece for myself. Use the pictures on the net that you find I can't supply you with any info on it.
Thanks again
Rick

Yeah, that's a brilliant design. Love it! I was in Vegas recently, what was the deal with the hunt?

I think this was for the Manhunt portion of the "There's something in the sea" viral ad campaign that ran from fall last year up to the release of Bioshock 2.

It was a website full of puzzles and information that followed the story of Mark Meltzer, a paranormal activity enthusiast who had his daughter kidnapped by one of the Big Sisters from Bioshock 2. It followed his efforts to unravel the mystery, and involved many salty characters and international conspiracy. After a period of time, there would be a new website with new puzzles, and the story would go on.

Some of the events for this took place in real life -- there was an address you could write to early on, and if you did, you could get a piece of swag (like a splicer mask) or a membership card for the International Order of Pawn (IOOP). Towards the end, messages were delivered in real life to IOOP members giving them times and places to be, where new puzzle pieces and bits of story were given.

The last stage, called "The Manhunt", included just such a real-life encounter, and one of the puzzle pieces given was a recorded message.

Now, I followed this process casually, so I didn't look at the pictures... BUT if I look at the pictures for the Vegas event, can you guess what someone was given?

Utterly fantastic.

And don't forget the series of puzzles which, once solved, directed people to be at certain beaches along the coast all over the world, on a certain day, at sunrise. Those who did so were rewarded with wine bottles from Rapture's Worley Winery, vintage 1958, buried in the sand, apparently washed ashore. Inside were several Rapture flyers.

All in all, an excellent ARG. (And not produced in-house by 2K Games.)
Too bad the actual game didn't quite live up to the superb hype.
But how could it?

Wow what a great picture! Thanks a ton for that. I didn't get a final one for myself cause it left in such a hurry. Tell you the truth I didn't know anything about this game before I started the project. It is pretty cool to see how important it was in the game. What a lucky person to get one of these.

Been searching the net for pix of items.

I am a huge fan of Bioshock (and System Shock2 from back in the day...) and I would like one of these. Very cool and faithfull to the game version. Very nice. Haven't tried out Bioshock 2 yet. But I will. Rapture awaits!:lol

That is just incredible work again Rick. I can't believe you made that from only a game image, amazing.

I would definitely be down for a kit, or 2!

I would totally be up for one! I'm also posting to see if anyone can build me some props from the game in some other sections! Dude, I'd love to own one!

Seeing this made my night. Congratulations on a great build. I will definitely keep watching to see if a kit comes 'round.
