Beware The Sarlaac!

I decided to add some movement to my Halloween display this year so I am constructing a large Sarlaac pit.
I used 2” white foam to build out some rings and sloping sides. Since I’m not digging a giant hole in my yard the concession I made was to build it up like an ant hill with the inside terraced to the Sarlaac.

I segmented it into three sections so I could transport and store it. I used some pvc pipe and dowels glued in so everything just slots into place.

Paint is a series of colors, dry brushing and washes. Since this is a large prop and I can’t spend too much time on it I am just going for the feel of it and not a literal representation.

I wanted to make the tentacles move so I used a wiper motor to drive some pulleys that I 3D printed. The posts are pvc attached to some plywood that I can screw onto the pulleys. Everything I can pull apart for storage. The drive belt I made from oil tanned leather.

I used some foam backer rod for the teeth, shaped with a sander and quickly hit with a heat gun to seal the foam.

These were all drilled and glued into the foam with gorilla glue.

I made the Sarlaac beak from floor matts I had and the tentacles from pool noodles. Kudos to the guys that make armor and props from this stuff as I clearly have a long way to go to be considered even a mediocre fabricator in this medium! It will be good enough for the candy raiders though!

Again everything was painted with acrylics and dry brushed.

Everything is assembled in a few minutes. The diameter is about 6 1/2’ and I have some desert camouflage that I’ll use for the transition into the driveway so it will end up being about 9’ total diameter.

I’ll be hooking this up to a motion sensor with sound and some dramatic lighting. It will either be a hit or a flop! Most of this stuff I had lying around so the total cost was under $100.

This is so AWESOME! I can't believe no one has commented. I am obsessed with Halloween, and making stuff for our lawn display. This is such a great idea and I love that you made the tentacles move. Really exceptional Work!!

Thanks for the kind comments. For those that have been following me, this is the latest in a few projects for Halloween this year.
