Beverly Crusher

I ordered my costume last weekend from Cosplaying! Yay!!! I will post pictures when it gets here! :)

Cool - looking forward to see how good a job they do on this. Don't worry about the two piece setup; you see Picard standing up from the command chair and straightening his uniform all the time; so this is also fairly close to screen accurate, at least for the male actors...

I've actually read in several places that there was a timeframe where the female uniform was two piece as well. It wasn't for a very large span of time, but it will still be screen accurate for that time frame. :)

Thanks Knightone! Does the communicator you posted have a voice box on the back? I got a lab coat/cardigan to wear over my costume. It's a pretty thin material so I'm not sure how much weight it'll hold.

The only thing I'm worried about at this point is that we screwed up on my measurements somewhere and it's not going to fit right. I'm a tiny person, so I really don't want it to be too big anywhere, like most costumes are. So I'm pretty anxious to get the costume! :)

The dull coated sonic badge looks a lot better than I would have expected! :D

Can you just attach it to the costume with a magnet and forego the sound box?

Yes, the communicator is the type with the separate sound module in the back attached with a magnet. But you can use a rare earth magnet to attach it to your uniform instead of the included sound module. With the rare earth magnet, it's actually more secure, so you won't accidentally lose your badge. The badge itself weighs next to nothing.

Just be careful when spraying the dull coat. Do one thin layer at a time as the smooth metalized plastic can cause it to run if you spray it on too thick. Spray one light layer, let it dry, then spray another light layer. You won't need more than two or three layers of it.

As for your uniform, you can usually find places locally that can do slight alterations for you so I wouldn't worry too much about some minor imperfections.

I compared the IPI communicators to the Rod.com/HMS ones as well as some castings that supposedly came from some original molds. They all matched up nearly identically in size and shape in every way. I'm guessing either HMS/Prop'er (sp?) made their protoypes or Paramount just gave them originals from their prop department. I took some quick pics, I can try and take better pics if you want them.

gencomp.jpg

The one on the left is the Rod.com/HMS, the one in the center is from the production molds, and the one on the right is the IPI. The production one is a hair smaller than the other two. The IPI matches almost exactly to the Rod.com except the cut-out in the gold section is slightly offset compared to the Rod.com. It's not noticeable unless you have the two side-by-side, though.

TNGcomp.jpg

The one on the left is the Rod.com and the one on the right is the IPI. The IPI is a mm or two thicker than the HMS one, However, when being worn, you'd never tell the difference without an up-close inspection and knowledge of the real thing. The one in the center may or may not come from studio molds. I got them in the same lot as the Generations badge above, but was not 100% assured of the provenance of the TNG series ones.

As you can see, the IPI's are very, very close to the Rod.com badges. So, for an accurate costume, the IPI's are a great choice. Certainly better than most of the metal versions (unless you can find an original Lincoln Enterprises badge from the late 80's, which looked wonderful). I just like the IPI's better than resin cast since the sculpted and pre-colored detailing allows for a neater appearance than painted resin.

I've had the TNG IPI communicator for years, and I never knew it was so screen accurate.

Edit: I just looked up combadge on Memory Alpha and the actual prop doesn't have the black edge to the delta. However the two parts can be separated, so a repaint would be fairly easy, just need some matte gold & silver.

Actually, the early season combadges did have the black edge painted on the face of the delta. Somewhere in season 4 or 5, they started only painting the sides for the most part. Although I'm sure there were exceptions. After having spent years looking at screen grabs, behind-the-scenes pics, and actual screen-used pieces, there was never any consistent rule to anything.

Might have to go through the screen caps myself and decide if I want to repaint it, then. The silver is marked from all the times I played with it, but a matte coat might be enough to hide that.
(end of thread derail, sorry)

That seems to be the norm for all the Star Trek shows; there's always some variations to almost everything...

As it is, I suddenly remembered I had some mirrored sticky-back stuff, so I cut a new delta out and it looks great.

No need to repaint, now.

(This is mostly on-topic 'cos it's another view of the IPI combadge.)

Special thanks to Knightone! We ordered my communicator that you suggested and my husband sprayed the dull coat for me. It looks great! He also made a new back so I don't have to use the voice box (which didn't work even after changing the batteries, btw).

My hubby also ordered a new set of pips for me. We're not sure if we're going to use these or not though because one of them falls off very easily. It looks like the makers failed to attach a clasp on that one. Also, we're not sure if the needles are too long. We have to wait until I get my costume to see if it'll be too large of a gap.

My costume SHOULD BE HERE THIS WEEK! I'm super excited. Once it gets here, assuming it fits, we'll be done with this costume! :)

I've included pictures of the new communicator and pips.

(above) This is the gap I'm talking about. I'm not sure if that will be too wide or not. But we shall see.

(above) You can see where the clasp is missing from the middle one. Nothing a little super glue can't fix, but we'll just have to wait and see how it looks with the costume.

My costume from Cosplaying is waiting for me at the post office right now!!! Going to pick it up this afternoon!!! Everyone cross your fingers!!! :)

Yay! I hope they did a good job on it for you. Be sure to update us - there's not enough Trek on this board...

:D

Big trove of Beverly screengrabs here at Trekcore. Also check out the extensive grabs for every episode, series and movie!

Different hair in nearly every episode... :rolleyes

I seem to recall that she wore a wig, because she changed her hair & the producers weren't happy about it. I can't remember at what point in the series that was though.

Good luck w/the costume!

The outfit isn't that difficult to make. The fabric is heavey weight lycra spandex. I have seen this costume made with shiny stuff reversed and looks pretty good still.

Simplicity makes a pattern and I think the pattern sold at roddenberry.com is very close if not the actual pattern from the show....I think.

The hardest thing would be making the piping. It has to match the fabric so it has to be hand made or cover store bought. Also the invisible zipper in the front might be a little harder than a regular zipper. I am unaware of any differences from male to female in the uniform. I am pretty sure they are strictly unisex.

Yes, actualy. She stated once that she was always in a wig because her hair was to long. She thought it was funny to be put in a wig to shorten her hair.

It turned out well! :) Sorry I haven't updated, it's been a rough week. The costume is nearly perfect. However, the sleeves are too baggy and long, so I'm gonna have to find a tailor to fit the sleeves a bit better. Other than that, it's great! I'm very happy with the way it turned out. I will post before and after pictures after I get it tailored.

Thanks for checking in! :)

Sorry I haven't updated in a while. There isn't a whole lot new going on. Just a few small things:

I decided not to use the cardigan we ordered off eBay. I just don't like the style or color with the costume. We've been searching online with no luck and I also went to a local scrubs store and wasn't able to find anything there either. So, I'm still looking for a lab coat that will work with my costume. Otherwise, I'll just wear it with no lab coat. Any ideas? I think it'll still be OK if I don't have one. I have red hair and blue eyes, so that helps. Anyone who knows who Beverly Crusher is, will know who I am. Everyone else will just think I'm "someone from Star Trek" (if I'm lucky) no matter what I do...so I don't think it'll be that big of a deal.

I had to have my husband re-coat my communicator. It started to look like it had spider-webby, finger smudges all over it, even though we were very careful and never touched it on the face. The second time around seems to have done the trick so far.

I still haven't taken the shirt in to have the sleeves altered. I will do that next week probably and will post before and after pictures then. I also need to experiment with my hair. It's been a while since I tried the 80's look. So I've got to make sure I remember how to do it without looking too ridiculous.
