Best colour for a Tennant shirt?

Any of you Tennant costumers have suggestions on the perfect colour for a Tennant shirt to go with the Brown Suit? I think I've nailed the cut of the shirt, but before I get it tailored, I thought I'd get some input on the color from you lot.

Thanks!

He wears a number of shirts with the brown suit. The most popular is a VERY light blue linen shirt that many people confuse with white because of lighting conditions. Later in the series he wears a heavier shirt of the same shade, but made of a more standard cotton/poly blend that absorbs light better and looks darker. The second most popular is a dark blue shirt with a bit of a sheen to it. Third is the slate blue shirt worn in Tooth and Claw. In a couple of episodes he wears a tan/brown shirt, but I'm not a fan of that one and I think it makes the rest of the costume look a bit dull.

Yeah, according to the producers etc. on Doctor Who Confidential and various other places the shirt is in fact blue. It's such a pale blue, though, that it appears white in a lot of lighting conditions. Risu's got the time line of his various shirts pretty much exact.

Be careful about the tie, though. It took a while to find a suitable tie for my brothers 10th Doctor Suit (that he bought on ebay).

How'd you find the right material for the suit? I'm curious as it seems that shade of brown with blue stripes is impossible to find in wool or polyester let alone cotton (which his real suit is made of). Are you going to do the whole coat too? It's microsuede (couch material) of all things!

Thanks for the input, guys. I've settled on a dark blue that seems pretty close to some screencaps I've seen, though I've had to opt for a cheaper fabric, so hopefully it comes out alright.
Decipher, for the tie, I'm going to get Indy Magnoli's swirly tie replica (it's always been my favorite Tennant tie) and possibly find a local embroiderer to embroider over the swirly areas to match the End of Time/Eleventh Hour look.
As for the material, Pumpkiny told me that Baron Boutique is now doing custom printed fabric based on fabric Primrodo had made to match a swatch from the same exact Gap-brand trousers that were used by the production team on the show. Once I've verified that they still have that fabric in stock, I'll be placing my order. Pumpkiny gave their cut and accuracy his seal of approval and, seeing the level of research he's done, I'm inclined to take his word for it.
The lovely coat, I'm afraid, will have to wait, due to funding issues. But I'm probably going to end up having one made by Pumpkiny, as they look fantastic.

Pumpkiny is making me a coat right now, his can't be beat. I got a chance to see the first one he ever made on commission a couple months ago and even that one was fantastic.

If I were you I'd wait on the suit material. I just got a picture in my email of a rewoven fabric for both the brown and the blue suit. The brown is an exact copy of the Gap swatch I sent them (color, stripe spacing, weave, everything) and the blue fabric matches the weave and pinstripes spacing of the original blue shirting fabric but is made heavier and the correct colors so that it doesn't have to be overdyed or interfaced to match the screen used material. I'll have the swatches in hand shortly and I'll post more about them then.

And for the tie, I'd recommend you pass on the swirly tie as well. The pattern is inaccurate. I'm doing a run of that tie proper which Magnoli is manufacturing. Here's the thread:

I just received the prototype pictures a couple days ago and I'll be posting them before the end of the week. They look amazing.

Anyhow, unless you need these things ASAP, there's very good stuff on the horizon, so it's not a great time to jump on the best available solution of the moment.

Risu:
The tie sounds great and is cheaper than Magnoli's as well. Unfortunately, I'm new and can't post in the Junkyard, but I'd love to see pics when you have them ready.

As for the fabric, do you have an ETA/cost on that? Depending on the time frame, I might wait or I might just buy what's available now and then buy a second one with the better stuff.

I don't have an ETA or price, but it feels like it's pretty close to being a reality. I'll be making a post when I know more.

Yeah, I think I'll get what's available now but I was always planning on getting a second one before too long, so I'll get the perfect stuff at that point. The brown, that is. I've never been a fan of the blue.

Anyway, thanks for all your help. Glad registration finally opened so I could stop lurking and participate.

I should have known in a forum like this people would be able to track those sort of things down so easily. Makes me wish I had joined up before Halloween two years ago. Life would have been so much easier! You'll have to post photos when it all comes together.

There's no doubt that the Pumpkiny coat is the ultimate in accuracy.

However, the Abbyshot coat is very close in accuracy. But, its about 1/3 the price of the Pumpkiny, is made of conventional coat material and can be worn daily if you like. I have one and love it. I won't say its as accurate as Pumpkiny's but for the price and wearability it provides, I am delighted with it.

There are definitely aspects of the Abbyshot coat I like, but there are others that really bother me. The wool is actually a very good color match in person to the real fabric, but the liner material is garbage. I don't know why, but it seems to me that people tend to substitute herringbone for just about anything they can't find. Tweed, houndstooth, stripes, it's made me kind of hate herringbone as a weave altogether. Also, it may be because of the weight of the wool or the pattern, I'm not sure which, but the AS coat sticks out funny at the lapels, it just doesn't drape right. As a trench coat it's fine, but for screen accuracy it doesn't work quite as well. Still, it is 1/3 the price and you get your money's worth.

Odd, I haven't found any of those problems with mine; perhaps you have seen a "lemon". I bought mine from Abbyshot at a local convention last month and was able to try on several for best fit etc.

With respect to the price, yes it is 1/3 of the cost of the Pumpkiny. But you get a product which has 95% of the accuracy and far superior durability and daily wearability. Based on that, I think it offers much greater total value. So, it was a no-brainer for me.

Giving a percentage of accuracy for something like that is problematic. In my opinion Steve's coat is probably closer to 90% accurate in materials, pattern, and every last tiny detail. I would give the AS coat more like a 50%. Just speaking for the pattern I would rank both of them higher. The thing that makes Steve's coat the tops is his attention to the tiniest of details, and of course the quality stitching. I was on the fence for a long time and the thing that finally got me to place my order was seeing the quality of his stitching. There's nothing like it. Nothing is made like his coats. The ONLY thing I could possibly take issue with is the unspoken "no personal requests" rule. It's not a big deal, though.

I saw the AS coats at Gallifrey in February and tried on the medium and large, the first of which fit me really well, even the length, and I'm 6' 2". Again, well worth the money, but I've wasted way too much money buying cheap and upgrading in phases to even consider it. I knew I'd want Steve's coat eventually, so I passed. It's really all about what degree of crazy you are for the hobby. When it comes to 10 costumes I'm as crazy as it gets and proud of it.

EDIT: Oh, and as far as durability goes, I've heard Steve's Malabar is some really tough stuff.

I really think the Abbyshot is a good deal better than 50% accurate. In terms of stitching, the coat seems quite robust to me. And believe me, living in Canada (the land of the 9 month winter), one gets used to spotting a poorly made coat - and the Abbyshot is solidly built.

In my opinion, if you simply must have the most accurate coat and don't mind the steep price, get the Pumpkiny. But if you want a coat that you can wear every day, or if your budget is not unlimited, get the Abbyshot. Just decide which category you fit into and buy the coat that's right for you.

Risu,

If you start a group run on either the tie or the fabric, you can count me in. Figured I'd tell you here, since I'm nowhere near 45 days and can't post replies in the Junkyard.

Huzz, thanks for the info on the Abbyshot. That puts it a lot more in my price range for the near future and then I can always get Pumkiny's later. Much later, probably... I'd be more likely to buy a giant TV for a grand so I can watch Doctor Who in glorious HD before I spend a grand on a coat I'll only be able to wear like 6 days of the year (I live in Florida---ugh).

Yea, well put together, I won't argue against that. It's not really the durability of the stitches I was talking about, it's the skill behind it. As someone who has done my fair share of sewing, to me it looks like a work of art.

And the majority of the percentage I didn't count is because of the materials. Wool is too heavy and that liner is just, well, herringbone.

And jedibugs, the material will be sold by the yard, not as a run. I'll be posting about it here in the costuming section, not the junkyard. As for the tie, I'll add you to the list. So long as you can read the junkyard you'll be fine, just communicate with me via PM when the time comes.

You're welcome!! But hey - the way the weather is going these days, you could probably justify buying the coat to stay warm in the new Florida winters you guys are getting lately!!!

Cheers

Hey Risu (now thet we're not scrappping over the coat :lol ) - re the Tie - I'd like to have one to match the deep blue shirt that Ten wears from time to time. Is your tie appropriate for that? And to confirm - is it going to cost $45 shipped?

Cheers!

Yep, he first wears that tie with the dark blue shirt and since I'm not at all a fan of the end of time that's the way I'll always see it.

And yes, $45 shipped.
