Beginner Budget Batsuit Build

What's going on guys, well cosplaying as Batman was something i had always considered for the last few years, but always would back out cause of nerves. Well this year I decided to go through with it and build a costume for Fan Expo here in Toronto for september. Why the budget you ask? well from doing research I saw people easily spending over a grand on their costumes, and I just couldn't do that for a first try and for something I may only do once. Now this costume will be a comic book style batman, because well I grew up on the animated series and well I never really loved the black suit (please don't hurt me). Also I read on either this forum or another from a member saying that he liked the comic book suit cosplay better because it relied more on the physique of the wearer. This I think (if i can get in good enough shape :p) will set me apart from the other hundred batmen there. I'm not going for any specific suit here, just a little bit of everything, to make me unique.

ok so first i went over to handy dandy ebay and ordered a rubies cowl (i know, i know) it actually fits pretty good and looks great on my head. I plan to plasti dip it later to get out all the kinks and fix the bent nose. It was pretty crinkled form shipping, so i went to the dollar store, picked up some balloons and blew a balloon inside the cowl and left it there for about 20 hours. it was just under 60 canadian with shipping. our dollar sucks right now.

next I went onto amazon and ordered a Zentai body suit from china. And wow it feels amazing, the fabric is awesome. A little shinier than i wanted but a lot of it will be covered by pieces of the suit. this was just under 40 bucks

next I went to the corner store and bought a roll of double bubble gum :lol this will be the center piece for the belt. Than with my trusty sidekick girlfriend we went to the dollar store and bought flashlights, emptied them out and painted them. this isn't the final product, they need another coat. but you get the idea. total cost with the spray paint? like 20 bucks?

Next I went to home depot looking for rubber matting for the emblem. they didn't really have what i was looking for and they only had long rolls of it. soooo i bought a roll of thin all purpose rubber. I can always use this for other stuff or if i screw stuff up. so i found a logo i wanted, i decided to go with the batfleck logo. printed it off google onto a normal sheet of paper after shrinking it a bit. just wanted it to fit my chest, not going for realism here. the roll was like 15? i don't remember.

As well while I was at the hardware store I also picked up a nylon tool belt for about 15 bucks. i won't bother taking pictures of it, and it's going to be modified. i think i'm going to wrap fun foam around it and paint the foam. As well I went and bought some black faberic, it's a blend, I can't remember of what, i'll get back to you on that. it's 6 feet by 6 feet. obviously this is the cape. I have yet you cut it yet. As well I have purchased EVA foam gauntlets from The Foam Cave. they haven't been put together yet, so i'll post pictures when I have. And lastly, the other night I bought black lycra wrestling trunks on amazon. I will take pictures when they get here.

ok that's it for now, thanks for reading if you made it this far. so far I've spent a little over 200 maybe? i'm thinking the project is going to cost me about 400 when all is said and done.

Way to go, man. I LOVE when people re-purpose found items into costume pieces (re: your belt pieces so far). This is looking great. Keep it up.

What's going on guys, sorry it's been so long since I have updated you. Was just busy finishing up my school year with finals and such. So last week we went out and bought black spray paint and painted the emblem black. Today we trimmed off all the uneven cuts and bits.

I then decided it was time to glue it to the costume, so i had my trusty side kick wrap me in cellophane so i wouldn't get glued to the suit :lol. this totally left me feeling fat haha.

I also got my bat underwear in the mail that I had ordered off amazon. They are compression bottoms made out of nylon and spandex. Anyways, so i glued it on with cement glue, and then used super glue on the corners that didn't stick. I have not glued down the underwear, but here is an idea of what it's starting to look like.

the emblem looks slightly to one side but that's just shadows the fabric sliding. I'm liking it so far, but man I had no idea how much work this project would truly be. But I'm having too much fun to care. see you guys soon with more updates :)

looking good thankyou for the belt idea :D perfect for my daughters robin my suit is costin me nearly £1000 so gotta keept hers to a budget :)

thanks for the comments guys, sorry it's been so long since an update, took a little break from the costume and had my credit card info stolen, so haven't been able to order anything until my new card comes in the mail. :angry

well we got started on gluing my gauntlets together that i had ordered from the foam cave.

next update will be painting them and plasti dipping them. cheers guys

Could I just spray paint instead of plasti dipping? Cause I don't have money for plasti dip.
I never use plastic dip on foam armour I use liquid latex really cheap and goes a long way add a small amount of acrylic paint for colour then brush it on with foam brush just make sure you cover the whole piece in each coat before ot dries or you end up with clear lines where you painted it

aaaand we are back. Apologies, me and batgirl have been really busy this summer.

so we first tried spray painting them, and it didn't fully stick, so we sprayed them with plasti dip and then spray painted them black. this is how they turned out. the velcro has come off a bit and needs to be reglued, so that won't be so visible in the final product

next we got to finally working on the belt, i ordered 12 sheets of thin foam on amazon for 15 bucks shipped (thanks amazon prime). we then cut them into strips and glued them over our belt with the remainder of our cement glue tube.

and that's it for now. thursday, we are going to paint the belt the same gold as the belt pieces i showed earlier in the thread. oh and if anyone could suggest some gloves for the costume to go with the gauntlets that would be great, thanks!

see you guys soon!

ok guys, time for another update, bit of a bigger one. now that all the paint had dried on all the extra pieces i needed for the belt, it was time to put them on. i'll let the pictures do the talking now.

ok so this is what it looks like after all that work

pretty darn proud of us for putting this together, hands down my favourite part of this costume so far. now as you can see in the other photos, you can still see it says "cigarette case" on all the cases, so i did some quick thinking and came up with the smart idea to find a tiny little batman logo online and trace and cut a bunch of them out of foam, paint them, and then glue them over the writing. here is what the painted little buggers look like now.

as you can see, there is also a black one. I decided to make that the center piece on the middle part of the belt to keep everything symmetrical. ok well this will be added in my next update. Stay awesome gotham!

i'm glad you guys are enjoying this build. means a lot. small update today. but rushing to get this done as it has to be done by next weekend.

ok so this is how we covered the lettering on the boxes. as well as putting a small little addition in the middle.

the boots should arrive today from amazon. there was a issue with those that we will have to deal with, but i'll talk about that in the next update. thanks guys!

ok so today is going to be another big update, i'll split it into a few posts probably, and tomorrow or sunday i will post the final product as I will be wearing it tomorrow at Fan Expo here in Toronto, i forgot to take pics of every single bit of the process like I have before, but we had to rush to finish everything today and there were some scheduling conflicts.

ok so I mentioned that there was a problem with the boots. So i had planned at the beginning of this project to order Gotham 100s like many of us batman cosplayers do. I noticed i could have them shipped by amazon prime, so i put them off for last, but when i wen't to order them a week and a half ago, they were no longer available to be fast shipped, i looked around and couldn't find any other leather men's costume boots that night and i panic bought the Gotham 108s that are...2 sizes toobig! it was all they had left! and not only that, they were brown and made of like felt! but luckily they were only half the price. they were like 60 after tax.

luckily, batgirl knows what she's doing with a needle and thread and sewed the boot tighter around my calf. so first we had something like this.
14172069_10157468925540232_1380944517_n.jpg

so i felt like I had to do something to make this more batman like. on the spot, I came up with the idea of making shin guards, so I literally just quickly googled "shape template" and found a picture of a shield, i printed it out, traced out 6 of them out of foam, glued them together, just eye balled it.

14193684_10157450656680232_370348436_n.jpg14169685_10157450656540232_1436075273_n.jpg

then I got to the paint, painted them black, and then glued them to the boots while i was wearing them.

14172081_10157468925440232_1742759405_n.jpg14217985_10157468925345232_403485577_n.jpg

you can still see some red, i painted the boots with two coats of black (currently drying as i type this) i'll post the final product tomorrow or sunday when I have time.

While I was doing this, batgirl was hard at work, unstitching the hood/face from the original body suit, and then cleaning up the neck line by sewing it back together.

ah what is that mysterious black strip you say? well that is the velcro that we glued to the shoulders, to attach the cape. I'll post pics of the cape later. so while we wait on that and for other things to dry, here is a sneak preview of what is to come!
