Baylan Skoll / Shin Hati Dark Jedi Costumes - Ahsoka (Series) Star Wars

This is great. Do you

Thanks for sharing. Do you have any pictures of the back of the tunic? I’ve been trying to gather glimpses from trailers. It seems like the same pattern of the front is repeated on the back.
Yeah, I can get these up later today. Essentially, we took a guess that the tabard carried the diamond-esque pattern from the front to the back. We chose to hide the fastener under the arm next to the rib on one side. Snaps didnt hold, switched to sewed velcro. The still we saw from a newer clip, after the trip we took, made it look like they had a sort of leather lacing tie up the spine. Personally, Im glad we did it the way we did as I could dress and undress myself vs someone needing to tie and untie a spinal lace pattern.

My beard is the first thing that drew me to this character. I was planning on putting it together as soon as I saw the first trailer!
Heck yeah! I have not been able to grow mine as long. It feels like it grows fast to a point then slows. Then I get frustrated trying to deal with it in my goalie mask and end up cutting it off.

I wanted to thanks everyone for the good quality shin stills in here. I’ve been working on a shin cosplay this month and the references have been essential. Mine is off for sure but I was just trying to work with options.

I used a fringe/gray instead of cord for the vest and now I wish I had used cord as it’s probably going to end up being like Baylan’s vest, but it’s too late now!

After mine I’ll be sewing a Baylan for my husband, but thankfully I wont need to use stretch fabric for his!
Very nice! If you want to add cord down the line, it can be hand sewn on top of what you have and look pretty good. As it is, I really like the use of fringe to mimic the cord. From a few feet away no one will be able to tell.

Thanks! I’m extending the 10 foot rule by a little bit for this rush job haha. It was a frustrating process to sew with stretch fabric, but it’s nice to just have it fit right over my head without assistance or zippers.

Just finished a saber hilt today. I stupidly bondo-ed the part that was supposed to screw open for the electronics closed….so I wrapped it instead of painting it to cover the gaping hole.

I really hope someone makes shoulder stl files for her

I did a quick Baylan for the Ahsoka preview at LFL, now I'm trying to go back and update what is needed. One thing I've notice and haven't got any clear pictures of is his boots. Looks like he may have armor or some kind of over laid. Has any one seen his boots?

Looks like it's spats with tabs in the back.

Kind of what I was thinking, with maybe one or two tabs in the back. Looks like gaiters of soft material and not hard armor. And in this picture it makes me wonder if they have chevron in the front, yet you can't notice it in any other picture so not sure if it's the lighting. Going to try and look more closely tomorrow.

Looks great for a 'rush job' I could work on it for month and not have it look so good!

I've been trying to discern some of the tiny details shown in the picture that was posted to Twitter. My goal is to get all the information needed to make a screen-accurate version. Here are my thoughts...

View attachment 1728267

1. I think the tunic may be leather. Possibly even a couple different types of leather. The central piece looks smooth and the others a bit suede. Hard to tell.

2. The belt sits on top of a piece of fabric that looks doubled over. I'm pretty sure the belt clasps in the back. There's one shot of the back and the tunic clearly has a zipper/closure down the back. There's a couple looped pieces on the belt that I bet are covering a clasp.

3. I 'think' the main tunic is on top of a fabric shirt. The sleeves look to be fabric and there's cord lining the junction where the sleeve would be. It wouldn't surprise me if the tunic is armless. This is bolstered by the collar. Look how the cording around his neck. This feels like it would be the same at the arm hole. I think it's a shirt under a tunic.

4. The train (not sure what to call it) looks to be made of a rough fabric. Different from the tunic or the shirtsleeves. Of course, it's hard to tell from one picture, but that's the impression I have.

5. The hanging leather belt is mimicking how medieval ring belts are looped and tied. However, there's no ring on this belt and it's so perfect/not bunched up, I'm positive it's purely a decorative add-on that is probably riveted to the horizontal belt.

6. He has a ring on his glove. How cool is that?

What are your thoughts?
1. Def a leather of some kind. I managed to find some faded black scraps leather for mine. While we didnt have time to whip-stitch or attach cording, just sewing didnt look too bad for the short production time. the pointed end was used for tucking behind the obi. Its mostly about getting the pattern right and people will know instantly, as they did when we were out there in June.
2. There is an obi under the belts (a sash like fabric worn on traditional Japanese uniforms) Its weird deconstruction this costume wife and I found they borrowed form medieval knights, Scandinavian materials and Japanese outfits. Since Lucas originally drew his inspiration from Akira Kurosawa's feudal Japan films its not that surprising I guess.
3. So to not get overheated with the layers, a gauze type fabric as the undershirt(with a mock turtle neck) and the visible sleeves, was under the leather tunic and a cloth vest as a middle layer(under vest) that I used to attached the shoulder armor to under the leather tunic vest.
4. Bottom half of the tunic we made as a separate piece for dressing/undressing. Think of it like a skirt with velcro on the side to enclose. made of a rough linen fabric that had texture. Sewed the obi to the top of this for, again, ease of dressing.
5. I made it two belts for the sake of dressing/undressing. Ordered two 60" long by 1/12" wide brown leather straps. I cheated the loop and tie with hidden rivets. that part worked out well. It was 3 pieces: belt around waist, 4" strip (riveted opposite of the 3rd strip), that 3rd strip makes the end that hangs(16" long). The reasoning for the opposite sided 4" strip was to fake that wrap around the waist of the belt. Simply taking a long piece of leather didnt work as it was not pliable enough to create that wrapping cleanly. it was bulky looking. Wish I'd had time to create some sort of attaching mechanism between the two belts. They kept separating when I moved. My assumption on the costume design was that it was meant to be a really long belt he double wrapped and then loop tied, but they def had to fake it as well, otherwise it would not have laid so well.
6. Yep! had that as well. Wonder if we find out later that the stone on the ring and his belt are force artifacts later?

Also, after watching the first 2 episodes, I am definetely going to reprint the gauntlets and modify to fit an apple watch on one side (make a custom screen face) and a disney band port on the other.

Your costume looks great! Your beard was way more consistent that i was able to get. Mine looks like I tried to dye the mustache and goat but left the rest gray. :) They look like they covered a pair of modern boots with boot gaiters. Definitely looks like they didnt spend much time on his boots, for what was an otherwise nice costume they made for the show. Check the instagram post images from Rosario Dawson she shared with Ray in them. How did you do the lit saber?! I had to 3D print mine and it turned out meh.

I just let my beard grow and it seem to fit the part. I agree that the boots look like they are covered with some kind of gaiters with a strap or two in the back.

As for the Saber, I got some files for 3D printing Disney Savi light sabers parts, so I took the 3D file of Baylan’s saber enlarged it to the Savi size, cut some parts and combined a few things. Not quite right and a bit big but it passes. I used it for the Ahsoka Screening at LFL in San Fran. It was pretty nice time. There where two others trying to do the Baylan outfit.

I regret not taking a picture, saber fighting with one of the Ahsoka’s that were there, but next time.

As for the gauntlets… They were a bit of a pain; I used some Velcro and a strap going around the back end. They were a bit to small, I have since resize them better making them a bit shorter and a bit wider (was hard to bend my elbows and hard to close with gloves), I’ve 3D printed them and will be using magnets like used with the Mando gauntlets, will be ordering the magnets this week to see now it works. Also looking at butting some lights, the new print I did, I cut out the buttons to have them open, I put clear cover so light can come through. The button layout is a bit different then the 3D files I have but I might try to change it later.

I’m still not to sure his top is made of leather but I do agree in the style is a mix of medieval knights and Japanese outfits types. I did my top as a Tunic/Tabard style with the skirt sewed to the top vest. But after seeing it again, he has two layers of skirts so I might be looking into adding the 2nd layer.

Also am reprinting the shoulders to make them about 10% bigger, Haven’t finish yet, should be done by tomorrow so I can test it out. Was debating with going 5% or 10%, I’m trying the 10% first and see how that goes, it does need to be a bit bigger for me to make it a tab bit more comfortable.

Another thing I’m reprinting is the stone for the buckle, it seems huge in the series.

Not much can be made out from the first two episodes that hasn’t been looked at in the trailer and other pictures. Waiting to see what else we can notice in the other episodes. Anyway, and interesting character and costume.

Just found this thread. Been looking forward to seeing Baylan on screen and seeing if he is a decent character. Everyone has told me since he first appeared I need to do him. Looking forward to seeing more of the research. Has anyone seen any good shots of his saber yet?

Shin's boots are from Demobaza. There are several styles with the same toes, quilted instep, and soles but the Tops Oneness Ws are the closest in color currently. (Edited from an incorrect shorter style. Somebody messaged me a better match.)

Sabine Wren's boots are also from the brand. Guess they shop at the same store!
