Batman the Animated Series props WIP Pic heavy

One of my favorite cartoons growing up was Batman the animated series. I loved the Art Deco style of the buildings and Batman's gadgets and I always dreamed of having all of his cool toys. I recently obtained a 3D printer so i decided to that i was going to make as many of Batman the animated series gadgets is i could find good source material for.

The first one on the list was the grappling gun, I watched a dozen of episodes and quickly noticed that the gun changes each time he uses it, i am not complaining but just stating that it never seems to look the same. I figured the best thing to do was select one episode and make that one, I picked episode 7 P.O.V. The next step for me was making the 3D model, I use AutoCAD because that's the program that I have and have the most experience with. After I was happy with the model I set off to print it. The printer is a nice tool to have but I find that it is just a starting point because after its printed there are hours of finishing work that goes into the piece. I ended up having to print the gun in multiple pieces so when I modeled it I placed two 1/8" holes through the parts so I could insert a dowel to help align and for strength. After i painted and assembled the gun it looked to me like it was missing something so i weathered it a little and I could not be happier with it.

Up next are two of the Batarangs that are used in the series. But i need some help with the other Gadgets that Batman uses in that series, any images of additional gadgets would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping to make as many of the gadgets as i can.

I was a huge fan of BTAS as well. I have to say, I am loving that Grappling Hook Gun. It looks spot on!!

I'm trying to do a BTAS Riddler costume for Halloween.

well done man. I notice some of your rangs are two pieces. Your printer was too small to cast it as one piece?

Yeah, they are a bit to big to print as one piece. The largest i can print is 6"x 6"x 6". for most of my prints that are to large for a single print I will model a cut like a puzzle into them so fitting them together is easier or like the Grappling gun i will model a hole in the part that will fit a dowel. Note that I will be finishing the rangs so when I am done the seam should not be visible.

This is nice (now yours is nice too):
B.T.A.S. Nightwing grapple gun w/ spear head other replicas prop weapons from Batman: The Animated Series (TV) (1992)

In an episode, I think Two face, Batman uses a gun that shoots a small magnetized tracking device (shaped like a bat, not very subtle)...can't find a picture though. There's also the knife he uses in Poison's Ivy first showing to cut aggressive plants...
or those smoke bombs he uses in a few episodes, but they're basically spheres...

infrared binoculars (I think):

I've always wanted to build the entire Animated Bat Gear lineup too.

Batarang next?

A weird variation I forgot about-

Thank you for the reference images they are helping out a ton. From the looks of it I am going to have a lot of different Batarangs from this series. I really wonder how many variants were drawn for this cartoon. Please keep the images coming.

This brings back a lot of great memories. Nice to see TAS getting some attention.

That is too cool! Thanks for sharing! I was a huge animated batman fan as a kid so its cool to see real life versions of his gear.

I just wanted to post a quick update on the progress of this project. Its been slow going the last week or so because i have been down with the worst Flu i have ever had. I finally felt well enough to get back in my shop this weekend so i figured i would post some progress pics. I finished the first batarang and it feels very nice in the hand. I have also made some good progress on the star style batarang, i just have to wait for the paint to fully cure then i will wax it and get it ready to mold. I decided that i would cold cast this batarang instead of trying to paint to look like metal. i think cold casting it with metal powder will make for a better result. You might as why paint it blue and the only reason i have is that i had more blue paint on my shelf than any other paint so i figured why not, kinda looks cool. I have also started to work on a second grappling gun. This one will be left open and i will make two hooks, one that is closed and fits in side and one that is open and has a cord connected from the gun to the hook. The last thing i got done this weekend was i finally got around to painting the case of my printer. The case was nice but a white case just did not fit in well in my shop, it just bugged me so i painted it a dark gray and topped it off with a red stripe to match my toolbox/laptop holder.

wow, you've been busy! All these rangs look great, and great idea regarding the grappling gun.

Although I love most incarnations of Batman, the Bruce Timm universe is perhpas my favorite because it encompasses so much of the character's history. These look great!

I forgot to take a photo of the parts of the gun before i assembled them so i figured i would post the exploded view of the drawing file in its place. Enjoy
