Banned member "Boomer" turns out to be scammer Mitchell Dylan Laine

He is living with his mom which goes against his parole so they will no doubt be picking him up on that.

So it is only speculation that he "might" be arrested for parole violation, and no confirmation that he was arrested? Until there is proof, I wouldn't buy it. This guy seems slippery and I am sure he uses many stories to dodge the bullet.

Agreed, thats why I asked for an inmate ID # or a booking #. Not unless OZ is really different, pretty much all the countries laws I know of, is once they are incarcerated than it becomes public domain and anyone can get their information regarding jail sentences. It has nothing to do with our Freedom of Information Act, public knowledge is public knowledge. Either way, once again thanks for following through with all this :)

Forgive me if I don't articulate this post well, I've been scammed out of money before [not by Mitchell] and can sympathise with what a lot of you are going through and it makes me upset to see you guys with trust and a passion for props get taken advantage of this way. Though I am glad Simon has taken such good care of the situation and gotten the best possible legal outcome one could hope for these days, I will hazard sounding like an internet "toughguy" and say I'd have rather seen "Mitchell" [real name?] with some long lasting impairments.

Had I seen this thread earlier, it would have been hard to resist the urge to drive over and have a quick chat to him as I live close enough to do it. It's too late now, and I am glad he is where he belongs. If he is going where I think he is [Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre in Wacol, Queensland] then he won't be having a good time, don't get your hopes up about him becoming reformed in any way though. In my opinion, he is [as someone mentioned earlier] a sociopath and will remain that way for a long time to come. I'd like to take the chance to congratulate Simon and anyone else whom may have helped, on putting in such a huge effort to help apprehend him because believe me that is no small effort here in Australia. Onya Simon.

Well that sucks. I wasn't optimistic to begin with though so THANK YOU Simon for doing what you did.

At this point I chalk it up as a lesson learned. I'm only out $280, I can't imagine how some of the other people here who've lost full suits feel.

This is my first (and hopefully only!) bad transaction here on the RPF and I find in general it's a pretty safe place to trade thanks to both members like Simon and the MOD's efforts in dealing with people who don't live up to their side of the deal. In all honesty this could have been MUCH worse.

*sigh* OB out.

Do you know if the cops are pursuing any charges or following up on our claim? Here in the USA there would be enough to issue a warrant and do a search of his house/brothers house/ mothers house to look look for the stolen goods. Also here it would be a felony charge because of the value.

I clocked your later 'figured the laws would be different' post, but just to give you some context, Queensland recently released a US citizen after serving two years for killing his wife on their honeymoon.

Soooo you're telling us, he's mostly likely already out of jail because of your guy(s) lax laws?

Trying to get recovery for that type of money would be difficult in the US. You would have to lay out thousands to recover hundreds, maybe.

International makes it way harder.

I have some clients who regularly lay out $10,000 a time for recoveries that net an average of about half that. The economics of doing that being to discourage repeat offenders in the muling and phishing scams.

But i doubt you could even find a lawyer willing to take the case without spending a bundle on the search.

hallam not sure i understand your post? To my knowledge the PD goes in with a warrant seizes any stolen items, after booked into evidence(depending on what type of crime) can be returned to original owner. I understand they don't go looking for the owner, but if the person who filed the report can identify the property and prove it is theirs they take it. The QPD has a detailed list (pictures/ser#'s) of items that were "stolen" with everybody's contact info why would it cost Thousands of dollars to recover? I might have to cover return shipping but that should be it.

Where did the info come from that he was on his way back to jail? A trusted source? You just hope it didn't come from an aquaintance of his, just saying it to call off the heat and get people to back down thinking justice has been served. I am sure he has friends watching for him, especially if he gave them some of the stolen stuff in exchange for their help. The stuff doesn't seem to have been sold, so it must be handed off to someone or more than one person to hide.

QFT!
This just infuriates me! It just seems like this guy will get a slap on the wrist and walk away with our stuff that has a real dollar value attatched to it. He will sell it and make a killing.
It pains me to say this but every time I get burned (yeah, it's happened to me a few times) I get less and less trusting. I always take an extra drastic step of over precaution every time I get scammed. This time, if a package is going to Australia I will THOUROGHLY check out the recipient (If I decide to deal with that individual at all). I know a few stand-up folks from OZ will read this post and think, "Oy, mate! It isn't fair to group us all together because of what this chuclehead did!"
True. However, as a result of my thinking I was getting the AP suit from him, Brad is completely screwed and will be left with nothing, I purchased a high dollar mannequin that now I can't use and even sold one of my lifesize pieces (cheap) to make room for this Stormtrooper that will never exist. This cammer has made ma VERY nervous to send ANYTHING to Australia!
Yeah...I would LOVE to see this nancy up close and personal. :angry

Sad, just sad. The amount of work to juggle that many aliases etc. he may as well work a real job. I Feel for his Mother. My oldest went through a stage where people he had ripped off would approach my Wife and I, and all we could say is "He's an adult, he's not allowed near us or the house, we don't know where he is, we can't help you." I think any prosecution of him at this point MUST carry an injunction against using a computer, cellphone, or any other piece of equipment that can connect to the internet.

I don't know who's going to advocate for the victims on this one, but as said, the DA must be hammered with "No easy plea deal" communications, or he'll just get another slap on the wrist, get time and a fine, get out, and start all over again. With guys like this, it's almost an addiction.

Take away his tools and you make it much harder to scam people. I'm sure he'd find a way if he's really that motivated though.

As an added option to the injunction against using a computer.... well to quote the movie "Swordfish": How Difficult It Is To Work A Keyboard With One ****in' Hand Sound Clip and Quote

Soooo you're telling us, he's mostly likely already out of jail because of your guy(s) lax laws?

Well, we can hope he may fall foul of some 'three strikes' law, if Queensland has any. Or that a magistrate will look at his record and decide the kid needs a serious kicking this time. You never know, but yeah, it's a concern. We don't like to keep people in prison, because there aren't enough prisons and it costs money to build more. Same as the US, really.

This cammer has made ma VERY nervous to send ANYTHING to Australia! :angry

You see, this is exactly the attitude we expected. It is already hard enough to deal with the numbers of 'will not ship outside the US' sellers on eBay. Last thing we needed was some scumbag dragging us all down. Frankly it's not a rational reaction - there are far more scammers in the US in absolute terms than there are here - but who reacts rationally in these situations?

I'm not blaming you at all. This is exactly to be expected and believe me, a number of us are extremely pissed at the damage this little **** has done to our collective 'brand' as Australian fans/collectors.

He is actually banned from using a computer , he has been using an I phone though.

Mate, cheers for going on point regarding this.

Although I - thankfully - have not been compromised by this cretin, its good to know a Perth brother stood up and swung the spade at this idiots head.

To all the folks who have assisted here - my thanks

Highest regards

MARK

When i do business with people i like to be able to call and chat on the phone to me it makes it more personalable then typing messages back and fourth just my 2 cents but hea thats just me and how i like to do things

Man this guy rreeeaallyyy needs to show up, i'd hate to have an entire 2 digit thread (so far) about me stealin money among all this other stuff. I probly need some shipping pointers so if i make sales in the future i'll know precisely what to do. This site is totally awesome and dang it would suck to turn on it and be kicked out like that. He's either dead or chillin in Costa Rica... Probly both!

Sorry to hear about you guys being ripped off like that, I live in Queensland and have extensive contacts in the Sci-Fi and Collectables community here (yes i am a dealer), if JediMaster can send me the details of what was stolen I will pass it onto my contacts and if anything shows up we may be able to recover it with police assistance as it is stolen property.

Hi All,
Kev Chamberlain here – CO of the 501st Legion’s Redback Garrison here in Queensland Australia.

Redback Garrison

I’m known as ‘Hudson’ here on the RPF and on 501stsithlords and ‘Kev Vader’ pretty much everywhere else.

I have a tendency to make long posts, but I will keep this one short.

Mitchell Thomas Jon Laine is a thief, fraudster and liar – with criminal convictions for such.

The prop and costuming community is one that is based primarily on respect and trust. Mitchell will, at every opportunity, abuse this trust.

Since Mitchell was first identified and banned for life from the 501st Legion (after just 6 weeks membership) I, as his ex-Legion CO, have sought him out wherever possible on many forums, and also been sought out by people who have been his victims.

I have therefore been able to compile a large dossier of information regarding Mitchell.

This dossier I have now made completely available to the mods here at the RPF, the Detachment Leaders of all the 501st Legion detachments, and will upon request make it available to the Moderators of any other forums where the mods believe Mitchell may be active.

Mitchell is a career criminal, and will most likely be spending the rest of his life in and out of jail. In the periods inbetween he will undoubtedly be creating fake identities and attempting to steal from our online community, as well as many others.

The simple solution is Vigilance.

As always, if a deal seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

Sadly, Mitchell lives in my neck of the woods – Queensland Australia. In recent times Queensland has been developing a vibrant and growing prop and costuming community, be it in in Star Wars or non-Star Wars related items, and It is my intense desire to see it continue to grow.

Mitchell WILL try and return, and myself and my other Redback Garrison Command Staff will pass on whatever new information we have regarding his activities to whatever mods require it.

For those of you who have engaged in transactions with him, well, history has shown that you are gonna lose whatever you've sent him, be it money or items. I'm truly sorry about this, but Mitchell is the poster boy for all that is bad in trading on the net.

PLEASE provide your mods with all the info you can with regards to your dealings with him, and hopefully some good will come of it.

In conclusion, I would ask that Mitchell's actions do not deter you from dealing with fellow prop and costume enthusiasts here in Australia, and if you have any questions make sure you check with your fellow members and mods before parting with money or items.

Thanks

Kevin Chamberlain
