Back To The Future Part III

I was watching BTTFIII yesterday, with a view to see if I could get any more detailed info on a current project of mine, the railway map.

I have a picture of the map from an auction site, but it's not quite good enough to see all the details.

Anyway I noticed that the one in the movie is different (see below), besides the colour, which could be due to lighting, the main difference is around Shonash Ravine, the Auction Map shows the bridge and a dashed line of the proposed railway, but in the movie the bridge is missing, no dashed line, plus the railway seems to continue near the bottom.

Which version do you think I should do, I'm undecided.

On a related note, does anyone have any close up shots of the map, that could help me out with wording and the inset section at the bottom right.

I'll post progress pictures soon.

Peter

Hi Peter

That's a great project that lot's of us are after. Thank you once again for your cooperation. Once you're asking for opinions, guess the map seen on the movie is the one you should do :)

Here's a progress report on the 1885 Hill Valley Railroad Map.

Border, Roads, Railroad, Contour Lines are done, I've started adding text, Fonts are not correct yet.

One of the things I will get stuck on is that a lot of the rivers are named and are unreadable, same with most of the areas I assume are ranches.

The biggest problem I have is I do not have a clear picture of the Insert Section at the bottom.

By the way, the overall dimensions of this is 35" x 51.5" :eek

Feedback welcome.

Great work! Looks awesome as usual. The only place to get those images are probably the BluRay, and even then...

I looked at the remaining words on the title and compared them to other maps of the time. Nothing yet.

Also tried to look at them in Photoshop; change contrast and sharpen. No good.

Best,

Yep. About the same as the auction photo. :unsure

I just remembered that this map can be seen in the BTTF game.
I think it was taken from a photo of the actual map. EDIT: You can't read that one either.

Another update to the 1885 Hill Valley Railroad Map.

Still lots to do, I've added as many names as I could make out, then I had to make a few up, if some of them seem familiar.....well I had to get inspiration somewhere :)

There is one main area of text I can't make out, which is 3 lines just underneath the compass arrow. I've tried looking on other old maps, and can't seem to figure out what it could be.

I am looking into costs at getting these printed up, so I will post a free version here (the Auction - Prototype one), and start an interest thread in the junkyard for the Movie Version at a later date, it may not be feasible and I may end up posting both versions here anyway.

However the biggest stumbling block is going to be the inset panel.

I can draw the coastline, railroad, and the contour lines, the problem is the illustrations, does anyone have any suggestions on what to do, maybe we could find other illustrations that I could use as reference, that would do the job.

Yes ! I am sure it is postcards to illustrate some great monuments. But my US knowledge is not enough to help you.

Looks incredible. You do wonderful work. I don't know how you do it, fast and excellent quality. I really enjoy your work and generosity.

2. looks like a simple mountain with 3 trees in the front...
3. some kind of a roofed wood building with a waterfall in front?
Looks a little bit like Wild West Falls Adventures in Movie World.

8. a mountain/canyon and in the front 2 trees (the black things)
9. I dont know, but it looks like a promotion picture from Big Thunder Mountain railroad in Disneyland... :lol
11. could be an indian village?!?

It is very hard to see what it could be...

One Picture should be Hill Valley, I think...

I know the images I have used are nowhere near the original, but best I could find. If we can identify what the images are supposed to be and find suitable period style engravings, that would be great. The other option would be to see if one of the talented artist RPFers could draw them in and engraved 1800's style and colour.
