wtf? :rolleyes :lol

I was named loosely after a Roman emperor myself.
How is a kid going to deal with being named after space smurfs?

MOVIE fans are rushing to name their babies after characters in sci-fi smash Avatar.

Choices include Neytiri - after the film's Na'vi warrior-princess - and giant flying creature Toruk.
Another favourite is Pandora, name of the blockbuster flick's fictional planet.
Pandora is tipped as top choice among US fans, with UK parents set to follow.
Avatar was the fastest film ever to take $1billion at the box office. Movie streaming site www.blinkbox.com found major hits often spawned a rash of new names.
A spokesman said: "Past the $100million barrier, the chances of a film's star lending their name to a child increase."

If someone named their child one of these names, they should be charged with child abuse.

Seriously. These names are about as original as a 50's B movie. Toruk??? :rolleyes

Pandora. I cringe to think of people naming their child this without knowledge, at the very least, of the classical associations (pandora's box).. it seems that what was once regarded as critical classical culture, knowledge of the greek myths, et al, has slowly been slipping away from us. We're raising a generation of kids on almost nothing but pop culture references. Sigh.

Oh come on...Pandora is not that bad. Why is it that bad? So she loosed on the world all of the evils we know...that doesn't make the name bad. Also, some people name their children Eve. Also another name for the first woman.

My two sons, Millenium Falcon and 12 Parsecs, and my daughter Queen Amidala think it's ignorant that people would do this!!!

A girl named Pandora...oh the jokes that she will hear.

People have been using stupid names for years, no big change here.

Sometimes, it does work out for the best.

Oh nah, I actually like the name Pandora. It's not so much the name as it is the cluelessness of the background that bothers me. I lament the loss of a large period of culture. :)

(At least they're less likely to be teased about their name if everyone has forgotten/never known the classical/historical usage..)
