Hey guys,
I've finished building my Na'vi-size 1:1 Chief Ceremonial Bow!

It measures about 9.5 feet in length!!!

Arrows are about 5.5 feet in length!

All carved out of Hard Maple!

UPDATE:

I'm letting go of my 'AVATAR - Chief Ceremonial Bow'!

Please share if you know anyone that is interested!

Custom Hand-Carved Hard Maple Wood and Na'vi-Size at 9.5 Feet Long!

Only one of it's kind!!!
;)

Thats gonna be one heck of a mantle piece!

Re: Avatar - Na'vi Chief Ceremonial Bow!!!

This of course won't be a functional bow, but a display piece.

Now, see... as much as I'm looking forward to seeing this, as a long-term longbow archer (maker of my own arrows and hoping to make a longbow soon) I just can't see the point of having a bow that isn't functional. Even if it were only a low draw-weight, equivalent to a LARP bow, I'd be ten times more interested.

This is no slight on you, it will still be a work of art and besides, to make it functional you'd have to have it scaled smaller than 1:1. Just blame the traditionalist in me I guess :lol

Re: Avatar - Na'vi Chief Ceremonial Bow!!!

I can see where you're coming from, Angelus Lupus. Lots of companies put out tons of replica swords and knives, and a decent number of other replica melee weapons, but bows (and crossbows, for that matter) get the shaft.

I wanted it to be Na'vi-size, so it would be very difficult in making it functional..:wacko
Plus, since its' real size is 9.5 feet long, it will make for an impressive wall display!

Re: Avatar - Na'vi Chief Ceremonial Bow!!!

The designer of that bow is a good friend o' mine!

Re: Avatar - Na'vi Chief Ceremonial Bow!!!

For anyone considering to make a usable Chief's Bow. Research the Penobscot Double Bow. I think it could be used here in a "reverse" configuration.

CTF I'd sure like to correspond with that "friend o'yours"

hey there

thats gonna be an awesome bow.... looking forward to your progress

Re: Avatar - Na'vi Chief Ceremonial Bow!!!

UPDATE:

The bow has been cut out of a huge lumber slab of hard maple, and ready to start being shaped!:love:thumbsup
Special thanks to Rebelscum for use of his shop!:thumbsup
I'll try and start getting some progress pics up...

Re: Avatar - Na'vi Chief Ceremonial Bow!!!

UPDATE:

I was hoping to take a few pics before I cut this out, but I didn't!:unsure
This started out as a huge piece of Hard Maple lumber. It was 3" thick x 10" wide x 9 feet long! .... and weighed a ton!:eek
To save money, I divided the bow into two halves and cut each half from the piece of lumber. To get a bigger piece of lumber to cut it out as one would not only cost a small fortune, but a lot of wasted wood that I wouldn't know what to do with.
With the help of Rebelscum and the use of his awesome shop, we cut out each half using his band-saw by cutting around a 1/4 inch away from the outline of the bow.
I then drilled 3/4 inch holes into the each half where the bow grip is and epoxyed each half together with a 3/4"x10" dowel rod.

I then took the "fun" task of sanding away to the border of the outline that was drawn on the wood.

This is where the bow stands now...
So far, so good! :cool:thumbsup

Wow man. That's impressive! Nice work! Heh, the arrow will be your size... You could pull a Wile E. Coyote and shoot yourself after the road runner :lol

Neat! What are you plans for the other section? I'd like to see the bandsaw that allowed you to cut that big guy out. WOW!

This isn't normally my kind of project and I'm not a huge Avatar fan...
...but THIS is too cool not to comment!

Impressive work and looks like wonderful craftsmanship.

Wishing you continued success,
Mike

Thanks guys!

I'll be picking up some hard maple boards on Tuesday to cut out the blue leafy looking parts. The hard part will be shaping everything, which is coming up very soon.

Here you go: The saw is an Italian made Laguna 18" with a 1" carbide tipped blade I generally use for splitting large boards and cutting veneers.

Brenton and I double-teamed manhandling the board because it was so heavy and required pretty careful attention to the cut because the blade isn't really designed for curved cutting. The saw is powerful enough to just cut right through it with no effort, so we had to be careful to not cut past his lines as well because when you get a board that heavy moving, stopping it doesn't happen instantly.
