This is my second costume and I am pretty sure im hooked now. I made this originally for DC batman themed Halloween costume party and then re did it for Emerald City Comic con. I Started off with a silver zentai suit and everything else I made.

The finished cowl and costume at eccc.

The clay used with just a block of artist clay cost about $20. Its reusable till its fired. I used a cake decarating turn table to allow me to spin the bust around easily.

The basic sculpt before finishing.

After the rough shape and design was made I used water and basic clay sculpting tools to smooth and finish.

Casting was done with a mix of plaster of paris and a small bag of mortar that was primarily Portland cement.

The first cast was not thick enough and cracked when removing the mold. I redid the sculpture and recast it making sure not to skimp on the thickness.

juicebox: "Looks great. How long have you been sculpting? "

This is my first time sculpting in clay. Its not that tough just takes patience and willing to keep trying till you get what you want.

Slush Molding with latex colored with black acrylic paint.

I was not super exicited about the latex cast when I first pulled it out. I have never done this before and not real sure how to get good quality casts yet.

I spent a lot of time cutting out imperfections and filling in holes with extra layers of latex.
One thing to note is I had good success filling in and smoothing out large areas with wood filler sanding it down then coating it with latex.
I will post some photos of the finished cowl soon.

Wow this is your first ever pull? Superb if it is... I wouldn't dream of starting on something like this for my first go!!

Thanks. I was not super happy with how my first pull turned out, but since I didn’t have enough latex to make another mask I had to make this one work. I did a lot of job adding thin layers by hand to smooth out imperfections. My most brilliant and successful idea regarding this was using Elmers Wood filler on the big divots and on re-sculpting the ears. I found that if I coated the wood filler over the latex sanded it and then covered it with several more layers of latex it really blended in seamlessly.

Also, rather than using talcum powder on the latex to prevent it from sticking to itself and which gave it a grayish color I didn’t quite like. I used charcoal that I colored right on to it with.

And this is the finished result. Not perfect but something I am happy with.

The belt, body armor, gauntlets and shin guards were all constructed from EVA floor mat foam and craft foam.

This is my first attempt making anything out of foam and I had mixed results. I am more of hands on learner so I looked at a couple builds using EVA foam and then winged it from there.
