Are the Psycho (1960) props real at Universal Studios FL?

Hey guys, I was too embarrassed to ask the employees if the props and costumes of Psycho (1960) at the Universal Studios FL were used in the movie or not. I think the Norman Bates jacket and the owl that are at the Universal Studios in CA are used? But I was wondering if these were. I just wanted to feel good that they were at a good home and didn't get thrown out or anything :D

I suspect it's a mixture of screen used originals and reproductions - as far as I know "Mother's" screen-used mummified head is still in La Cinémathèque Française in Paris (the original was a lot more orange than the one in the Universal Studios display, presumably to look better when shot in B&W)...

"Mother's" head is well done. But it's not the screen used one. Take a closer look and compare wrinkles and teeth of both heads. Very close, but not exactly the same.

Jason at the Hollywoodmoviecostume blog got better up close and clearer photos then I took, (here)

In the comments on that blog, some one posted this: "I don't think that's the actual head used in the movie! The real one is kept in Cinemateque Paris museum, I think!"

So I did a search of that Museum and Psycho and found this!!! (more pics, but you have to scroll)

That looks much better.

I also found that Jason had shots of the things from Universal CA:

:lol Well between the two of us we've got images of the original head covered, and they do confirm that the original was much more orange for the sake of filming in B&W (for the same reason that the blood in the shower scene was supposedly chocolate syrup).

1. Here's the supposed shower curtain from the re-make with Vince (lol):

2. the supposed knife from Psycho II (which went for way cheap, if legit):

Trenchcoatpanda, you are a research junky! :D Though doesn't look like the Psycho II knife sold as the highest bid wasn't even 10% of the reserve, which suggests the eBay community were dubious about its authenticity....

Ohhhh... I see the reserve now! Thought it was a good price on taking a risk for a moment there. I think Starwares has had some shady history on here in the past... Too lazy to look that up, until next time.

I wonder if that's the reason though...? I _think_ the orange looking head is simply much closer to what a real human head would look like in that condition... They may have just tried to create a realistic looking head...

I think very few, if any, of the props from the Horror Make-up show in FL are screen used.

They even have one of Howard S's busts in one of the displays - Jack from AWIL, if memory serves.

Still, it all makes for a great display in the lobby, it's nice to browse around.

Is the Hell Boy stuff legit? Stuff like those I've seen at auctions before, that was the real reason, I got excited about the Psycho stuff.

What about the Sci-fi and Diner? They had some cool old school props, that I weren't sure if replicas or not.

I don't know. To be honest I hadn't even noticed Hellboy!

The few times I've been (most recently last month) I've always gravitated towards the classic Universal horror stuff (Frankie, Wolfman), Jaws and Psycho display cases. I can tell you with 100% certainty that the Jaws items are reproductions.

The props are usually extras, meaning they were made for the movie, and on hand.

However it will be very hard to identify if it is an actual screen used prop, unless prop and wardrobe director sign off on them being actual used props.

I have a customer who owns a 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser, that was an actual Pace Car for the 1957 Indy 500. It was one of 4 that were on standby in case the others had issues. Most do not believe him as the original is on display in the museum. So it is similar to that.

Hey guys just found this thread and figure i throw in my 2 cents. A good friend of mine used to work in the "Creature Shop" and in the makeup shop at Universal Studios Orlando and was able to work on alot of the props that they have on display there. Unfortunately from what he has told me about the props in the Horror Makeup Show..... all the props are reproductions :( when i found this out it was just as bad as finding out Santa was not real.

The Hellboy stuff is real, not screen used. The older Stuff is all replicas. I used to work in the department and help install the exhibit.
