Thanks. In the end I spent so much doing the prototypes that I probably could have just bought the kropserkel or heavy leather bracers.
Hey defyital..... Long time no talk buddy, this is Bill, I used to live in Florida on the gulf of Mexico or west coast just above Tampa, we used to talk a lot and compare notes and pictures of our aragorn costumes... As a matter of fact I ran across one of your posts somewhere else that had the pictures you have posted here of you in your aragorn costume (I think the picture was one of your earlier versions) anyway you there was also a picture or two posted of my costume (or the part I had finished at the time it was hanging on the wall with an autographed pictureof Viggo as aragorn hanging above it and a six inch figure of aragorn in it's package??? Ringing any bells yet?
Man I tell you it's been about six or so years since I talked to you the last time and man oh man has my collection grown and mutated into a mini lord of the rings museum of my very own.... We have so much lord of the rings stuff that over half is stored in a storage shed because there just isn't enough room to put it all up for display so we just display our most important and favorite stuff.... It's going to take a couple extra posts to fill you in on everything but I'll start this one with the point on target.... You know though it's nice to know your still hanging around and still have your Lord of the Rings stuff...
So ok my Aragorn/Strider costume is as follows.... For the pants I've been using a set of black semi tight sweat pants (they are mostly hidden by the rest of the costume) but I'm looking for someone who can make a pair of screen accurate aragorn pants, I use the Museum Replicas Red aragorn shirt (I'm also trying someone to make me a screen accurate copy of the first grey linnen short) uhmm I made a pretty accurate suede leather vest with braided leather ties.... Every cut, stitch, and hems were completely done by hand not on a machine, I actually had to use a small very sharply pointed awl to punch the holes in the double thick leather before each and every stitch which took hours upon hours to get done but the end result was very nice, I still ha e to dirty it in places and weather it a little more then I need to cut the front right pannel in half then stitch it back together so it looks exactly like the real one so far, I tried very hard to make the vest as close as possible to the screen worn vest, the braided ties were a challenge because they weren't braided like a standard three strand braid, they are actually six strand round braided toes which I had never done before so with a little research I taught myself to do the rou d braiding but every extra strand makes it that much harder to get right and I was able to learn the four and five strand braiding but it didn't look quite right a d six round braid was even harder so I started looking online forready made six round braided pieces that matched the prop ties and finally found the right six round chords in 24" lengths but ....... Wait for it..... The chords were used for western bolo ties..... So I ordered four of them... now one would think that was the biggest hurdle but of course it wasn't the thing next was how to attach the cut down ties to the vest the right way because it looked like the ties were tied in a strange know then somehow attached to the vest so I improvised and got them pretty close to the pictures I had downloaded and enlarged... So the ties are on and look good and work perfectly so now vest is pretty much done... So next is the belt which was custom made and sold through blades by brown and it looks like the screen prop and comes complete with leather pouch for sharpening stone with sharpening stone included, it also has the leather roll pouch which was suppossed to be used for a tobaco pouch and or to hold other accessories and I used mine as a tobaco pouch with a nice smelling cavandish pipe tobaco... The belt also came with scabbard hanging straps to mount the UC aragorn scabbard, sword and utility knife, which of course my UC strider sword and scabbard hangs from as well as the elven knife of strider..... The next piece was the duster, other then kropserkles very expensive duster and one other costumer that made overly priced dusters there was one made by legendary heroes and then the Museum Replicas version but I bought the LH version (actually I bought two of them) I modified one duster to make it closer to screen one and the other one stayed sealed in it's pouch, I also bought the MR one because it looked better and then the costume was topped off with the evenstar pendant and ring of barahir as then the fellowship cloak which is made by stansborough fibers (the makers of the material for the screen worn fellowship cloaks) and then the cloak was of course topped off with the elven leaf fellowship clasp/pin..... Oops forgot the bracers.... The bracers I first got I used the pictures and suggestions from your first bracers (when I say you I'm referring to defyital) anyway they weren't bad but I ended up buying a set of the heavy leather four piece boromir/strider bracers and padded under bracers which were $140.00 but he raised the price after he made my set so I was lucky in that he did t raise the price before he made mine which were the last set he made and sold for $140.00..... He raised the price because they were taking a lot of time and effort to make the sets so he had to raise the price... Anyway I think that's everything the costume is suppossed to have?? Oh I also forgot about the boots which like defyital's boots that are made by caboots however unlike defyital's boots I had a couple changes made to my set which was to have them made out of a softer more supple suede leather kind of lime a light cocoa color to look closer to screen worn boots but I alsomade changes to the boots once they arrived at my door, I had to dissasemble the boot shanks to remove the inner leather liner so the boots wouldn't look so rigid and I also made a slit on the inside ankles of the boots and ran leather straping in a crisscross pattern like you would shoe laces because they were very hard to get the boots on and off without the slits in the leather then when on I just tighten the leather lacing..... Soooooooo ok now I think I have everything listed now???? I hope I didn't forget anything else the costume should have???
Overall the costume looks really good but boy howdy is it heavy and bulky worn all at once....to wear with the costume and boots and sword, belt, and elven dagger.... I don't know if I can post pictures yet because I just opened a new account here but defyital send me an email buddy so we can catch up on everything
