It will obviously need improvement, but I wonder if this could be made into a decent replica...

Looking at the video, it looks like a AA cast or very similar. Especially when they roll up the sight.

I thought that too. I wish they'd made it a "smoothy".

I think I'll stick with the AA. Although, I suppose you could pair this up with DST's other Trek stuff. Their phaser is the only thing that doesn't talk.

It's too small for accuracy, but cute and make noise & lights up.

It's the same size as the AA. There are subtle differences in the body shape though. The front emitter piece is wider and not as pronounced. The part underneath the body, where the brass piece fits, is very different. Hallmark's is sharp and elongated whereas the AA is rounded and subtle. You fire the Hallmark by pushing the wheel forward, the button ontop has sound clips from the show.

One thing I do not like is the diamond piece is not held down by a spring. When you turn it upside down, it "dangles".
