Anyone have the MR Sparrow Flintlock & answer some Q's

Wondering if anyone has the Jack Sparrow flintlock & can answer a few questions.

How much of the gun is cast metal?
Can the 'cast details' be removed easily?
'Simulated wood finish' does that mean the wood stock is all resin & just painted? If it is resin is the barrel cast as part of it?

I'm thinking of getting one, but if the bulk of the gun is resin..... I'm thinking I'd have to get a walnut pistol stock from muzzleloaderbuilderssupply.com and rebuild it and machine solid barrel from metal barstock if I have to.

I've already spec'ed out trying to build a semi close replica with available flintlock parts and stopped once it was $100 over the MR replica price. (I even found a UK webpage that offered the grotesque mask buttcap cast in silver surprisingly)

Thanks

No moving parts, mostly cast resin that's painted. I'd go your wood and machined route.

Thank you for the reply. I have the MR flintlock coming from amazon. Once it's here I'll see which dragoon walnut stock is more correct size wize (light or heavy version), what is metal and to be reused, and start the rebuild from there.

I know a few crafters that do custom rings & beads from doing craft fairs for years as part of my parents old woodworking business. So I'm hoping to be able to get one of them to do duplicate them in pewter/german silver at least or maybe even sterling silver. I inherited a bunch of gem/jewelery stuff and have some sterling silver & gold wire that could be melted down to use. Some friends had their wedding bands custom made by a guy they know and said I could probably get it done by him too.

I think the plan right now is going to be to call the guy's at MLBS and see about getting the walnut light dragoon kit in german silver with the Chambers Queen Ann lock substituted in to start as the base to mod. Machine a piece of hex bar aluminum to the outside barrel shape, hammer distress & age with some of the aluminum blackening solution, and get the detail plates from the sparrow pistol done.

Sounds fairly ambitious but I'm intrigued by your aspirations...

What about genuine antiques?

I'm just in the wrong part of the country to find the 'genuine flintlock antiques'... most antique firearm dealers that handle 18th and early 19th century stuff seem to be in the New England area or Mid-East coast from what I've been able to Google/Yahoo. I rewatched the production doc on the POTC:CoBP disk, they said Jack's pistol was found in the New England Area from a dealer and I think that they also said original english gunsmith that made it wasn't a bigger/well known gunsmith. Plus most queen anne style pistols that I see on the web seem to go anywhere from 1500 (pretty poor condtion) and up depending on condition & maker. Its just cheaper to to go the reproduction flintlock route since the parts are cheaper/ easier to come by.

I checked with the local gun shop about Il. Laws concerning musket/flintlocks/mussleloaders and they said that as long as its not able to be converted to fire a modern cartridge, I don't have to deal with any paperwork.... so I'm even contemplating using an off the shelf dragoon barrel now if I can find a match.

Anyway, I'll post progress on it as it goes, but the 1st hurdle I'm jumping is getting the detail bits cast or if need be getting/modifying the closest available castings of antique hardware as that makes or breaks this particular flintlock's look.
