Any tips for painting a Mando helmet?

So I’ve been working on modifying a Black series Din Djarin helmet and I’m to the point where I’m putting down a gloss black undercoat. I’ve heard Tamiya gloss black is the way to go, but I feel like I’m going through a lot of paint. Like, three jars so far. Am I doing something wrong? My first coat was put down with an airbrush. I got tired of refilling the paint so often and bought a little paasche HVLP sprayer, which seems to work well, but I went through a full jar in about 30 seconds. I’m not particularly happy with the finish, but I think that’s due to my inexperience. So more sanding is in my future and I want to try one more coat before putting down my Alclad. Any tips on getting a decent finish or if I should try something other than Tamiya for such a large piece?
