Any feedback on specialtyresin.com?

Hey guys, anyone use the Cast-a-mold 25T or the Model Pro resin?

For a one gallon kit of each at specialtyresin, I'm looking at about $150 shipped.

As opposed to smooth-ons $300 shipped for the same amount.

Thoughts?

In case anyone is interested at all, I saw that Ray22 used the products from this place, and decided, what the heck. I'll give it a shot.

Placed the order, and it shipped within a couple hours of placing the order.

That was pretty impressive. Will post a review once I get everything.

Absolutely. Update on shipping, shipped from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Being in central US, it looks to be a 2 day shipping to both coasts as they use USPS Priority Mail to ship.

Pretty impressed so far. Shipping for a gallon of RTV and a gallon of Model Pro resin was $18 to Boston.

Just wanted to let everyone know i did receive my order in Saturday. Talk about awesome service! I just hope the product is as good as the rest of my experience this far!

I mixed up a batch of rtv last night to make a mold of a boba fett ear i made earlier in the day. The consistency was perfect, and it degassed itself pretty well. Bubbles were rising to the top instantly, and this morning at about the eight hour mark the bubbles were all gone, but was still very sticky. ( demold time is approx 16 hours).

I'll hopefully have pics and a final review tonight provided i have enough time.

Hey Triton I have never used Specialty Resin's Molding supplies but I do use their resin which I have used ever since trying it, I even found that I can Rotocast stuff with their resin, with Smooth On you would have to buy their 65d don't get me wrong Smoothcast has some great produts I use mostly the molding stuff Rebound 25, and Mold Star 15 but I like the model pro resin for making kits and other stuff.

Oh hey Ray! Yeah I'm looking to use this resin for rotocasting some helmets as well as making parts, so that makes me very happy that it's gotten your seal of approval. You do great work!

Hopefully I'll have something to say about the RTV when I get home from work tonight!

Ok...so I get home, and it being 20 hrs later, I go to demold. First, the silicone is sticky. Not good. I couldn't demold it properly, it was sticking to everything. Rather than let it set till tomorrow, I yanked it out. It stuck to my sculpt, and ruined the mold.

I put it on bare bondo that was sanded down, I think that was my problem. I've since repaired it, sanded back down, and applied primer. Once that is dry I'll sand it back down. Do I need to seal it any further? Apply a mold release or anything prior to trying this again?

I will receive my order of a gallon of the Resin Pro Black (one hour) Wednesday. Ordered Friday and it was shipped Saturday. :) I am anxious to use it. I was hoping I could use it as a rotocasting resin. I'm happy Ray22 said he uses the resin for that. I will come back here after casting something.

Triton, I suggest a mold release. Maybe the surface wasn't sealed well enough or there was latex involved somewhere that left residue. My 2 cents.

Ive used specialtyresins moldmax white for some of my firsts castings ove r a year ago and I was extremely happy with the results. This is with no vaccum chamber at all either, just turned the dremel on and let it vibrate for a little.

This was a quick solid chunk test pour i did a month ago to test my 1/6 alien egg sculp mold. I used the same resin as the above pics (yep a year and a half old!) and it came out relatively bubble free after sitting for that long. Plus i didnt vibrate roto it since it was a throw away. Relatively cheap resin for such a great product.

Yeah...I patched it up last night, shot it with primer, sanded it down, and will hit it with Krylon Crystal Clear tonight before I try it again. Hopefully I'll have better luck this time. LOL

Thanks Triton Lol, you never know on this forum who is watching your work, yeah certain materials, clays with sulfur, and even primers don't gel well with some silicones. When I did my small McQuarrie X-Wing I wasted two molds and it was the primer I was using that had something in it that wouldn't let the silicone cure so I sprayed it with an Acrylic paint and that did it, I also use Tamiya's fine primer to seal any pattern that I mold.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know. I finished the part with primer, then Krylon Crystal Clear, and the silicone set PERFECTLY.

While it sure felt like it was cured at the 12hr mark, I let it sit the rest of the day before getting home and unmolding it. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Took a pull of it, and no bubbles at all. Couldn't be happier.

At half the cost of Smooth On products, this is an ABSOLUTE...NO BRAINER.

At this price, it REALLY opens up the door to a lot of people to be able to do molds and casts. Very pleased indeed. :love

That's great Triton! I received the resin I ordered a little bit ago and I am waiting to pull my first cast. I will update and let you know how it goes.

UPDATE

After using the Model-Pro Slow Black, I have to say I am very pleased. I actually used it as a roto cast resin. The viscosity is amazing! So low! The cast came out clean without imperfections. There were 0 bubbles from the casting and I did not vibrate the mold or shake. I can't believe how cheap it was for a whole gallon of this stuff. Shipping was ridiculously low as well. I am going to order my resins from this place from now on. Maybe even order some silicone based on Triton's experience with it.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

I've been looking at Specialty Resin's products, and will likely try them after hearing about your success. But I want to point out a few things. First, the 25T silicone that you used compares to Smooth On's Mold Max 25. The cost difference between these, for a gallon, is a dollar and a half. And, the 25T is twice the viscosity of the Mold Max 25 when mixed, so it will not de-gas without vacuum quite as well.

Also find that the Mold Pro Slow Black resin is comparable to Smooth On's Onyx Slow. A gallon kit of Onyx is $94.08 vs. a gallon of Mold Pro at $48.99. However, and I'm not sure why this is (but I will find out) the gallon kit from Smooth On is 16.5 pounds of material vs. the gallon kit from Specialty Resin at 8 pounds. Maybe the Onyx is twice as dense? (I doubt it). Something is not adding up. I'll call around and check it out.

So, as far as I can tell, while Specialty Resin's stuff looks really nice, it's not quite yet a "no brainer."
