Another leather whip question

Ok, I'm about to start up on my first ever leather whip....one thing I was wondering, though.....what do you put on the whip, after it's finished, that makes it tighten up? I've seen a few pictures of how whips look when they're first done, and after three or four treatments of something or other, they get tighter and smoother.......what are they using to do that?

As far as I know, to achieve a tight braiding you need to apply lots of leather dressing (pecards, etc...) that way you manage to tighten it up a lot.

Also when finished you need to break in the leather, apply a good amount of dressing and craking it a few times...
