Another Goonies Map

I had a free Saturday today with the wife and kid out of the house so I figured I'd make something cool. I got this from one of the free paper props threads (DecaturVader, I think it was yours so a big THANK YOU goes out to you)
Anyway, not bad for a couple hours of piddling around with it. Sorry the pics are bad. Only my cell phone camera seems to want to cooperate today.

It's not accurate by any means but it's good enough for me and whoever I show it to. :lol I just took the image down to Kinko's and had it printed up on the thickest paper they had for the size. I took it home, cut it out, leaving a bit of extra for when I burned the edges, Soaked it in strong coffee a couple of times, then baked it in the oven. The back side had some kind of different coating so the coffee didnt take too well. So I sprayed the back with lemon juice in a spray bottle and ironed it. It gave it a different texture than the front which ended up looking pretty cool, like an animal skin or something. I then made the creases (I think I did them right, I haven't seen the movie in years) and cut out the flaps for the burn holes. Then I took a lighter to it and had a damp sponge on hand to stop the smoldering at the right moment. I then took a black and red felt tip fine point pen to it and added some additional writing and ik blotches. It's all gibberish, but looks okay. I just looked at a few of the pictures on the RPF of others that have done a really nice job and just semi-copied.
Lastly, I put the music notes on the back (I read and write music at a college bachelor level, but didn't remember the original actually being musically correct so I didn't bother). I reinforced the edge with 2 additional layers of the same paper, glued together and tied an old brown shoe lace to it.

Real Fast, Real Easy, Real Cheap. Whadayathink?

looking good! just one suggestion though... the paper, although all burnt and aged looking, still looks too flat and "crisp"... i'd suggest crumpling the hell out of it, then unfolding it.... maybe set it under a heavy book fior a day after that. i think that would add to the aged look.

Good suggestion. I thought about doing that, however, after the coffee dried, the paper became a bit brittle so I was afraid to wad it up. The photo came out a bit washed. It's actually much darker and weathered in real life.

Good work, If you decide to make another you could use Minkoil to make it look old. Thats what they used on the original.

Good Idea! I was planning on making another one at some point. Do you know what the original material was? Was it paper, canvas, skin?

What i have read it was printed on a rather thick hand made paper.
Production Designer Micheal Riva used a Bunsen Burner to singe the edges of the map and rubbed mink oil on the paper to give it an aged look.
Here is the pictures of the notes on the back:
