ANH Vader- Helmetless Pics needed.

Gone but not forgotten.
I've seen the ones on StarWarsHelmets.com and they're helping, but I need more. Especially pics showing the cranium and the thingies on top.

[EDIT] By "Helmetless", I mean "Domeless". (I'm gonna kill that term if it's the last thing I ever do!) IE: I need pics of the faceplate w/o the helmet hiding the forehead.

Thanks!

Actually... ANH masks are a pain in the hiney because of the lack of mounting system. I know you're going for accuracy, but I'd consider ease of assembly over that. Just a thought.

There are some shots floating around from a VH1 special where you see the dome being taken off - crappy pictures, but the only time you see the ANH mounting system. Unfortunately, I don't have those.

Yeah, there's a fairly nice shot from VH1 on starwarshelmets.com. I'm trying to remember who posted them originally, but I remember many, many moons ago, somebody posted pics of an ANH helmet showing pretty decent closeups of the cranium, w/ the mounting system, but I can't remember if it was the original helmet and a re-creation. :unsure

Wait, I have this:

Cool, cool! That'll help at least with the ridge up the forehead.

Ob Jez's site there was some talk of "Apple Latches" anyone know about those?

-Sarge

The "Apple latches" are the three plastic "velcro" tabs used as the dome mount mechanism, previously thought to possibly have come from Apple2 computers or something like that.

No. That computer uses these types of velcro tabs... just turned out that they were made of a hard material and the ones used on the ANH Vader was soft plastic, though identical shape and form - from the same company - suggesting that it wasn't the hard plastic Apple2 tabs they used.

A very nice picture but isnt this is the Elstree cast I think and not a film original? Not a big difference but I thought I'd bring it up so no one gets confused.

Sarge I doubt you will get the real helmet pictures because its one of those top secret things in the Vader community. :unsure

I'm liking that you are doing this project though. Very cool!

From an auction, possible screen used, or fan made and passed off as original:

From VH1, you can see the apple tabs on top:

Not my photo, and a fan made piece, but ANH nonetheless:

So, where does one get these Apple tabs? I'm guessing they're only available from very old computers? Or are they still made? (crosses fingers!)

Thanks!

Would an Apple II have these? If so, where?

Or better yet, does anyone simply have one laying around I could buy?

Thanks!

As mentioned before, the originals were likely not Apple2 tabs, as those were done in hard plastic. But they originate from the same company 3M. As far as I know the tabs were a kind of precursor to the new 3M dual-lock system.

The tabs are a pain in the neck to obtain, especially the right kind, shape and color, and if you're lucky you might be able to procure enough sets to use for one or maybe a very few helmets, but nothing major. It really isn't a very good mount system as the teeth on the opposite part tends to break off and be damaged with repeated use and you'll be stuck with a non-functional mount system that is nearly impossible to get replacement parts for. I imagine this is likely why they changed to a ring mount system for ESB. The tabs are afaik no longer produced for sale by 3M.

Do I still get a kit?.....

I agree, for trooping or even display the ESB mounting ring is a far better way to go, much more secure.
