ANH Darth Vader Paint Scheme

I am masking off my helmet in preperation for painting. Using the references I have, it is difficult to tell if the lower part of Vader's eye sockets are black or gunmetal. This is the only issue I am having right now, the rest of the color scheme is not problem.

A definitive answer would be greatly appreciated.

Chris could you post a pic of the exact spot as I think it's different on both sides if I understand the part your refering to.

Chris, I used the template made by Cantina_Dude and NoHumorMan in this thread http://www.therpf.com/index.php?showtopic=113798&st=40 when painting mine. Here's the reference pic:

Referring to the diagram above, Vader's right eye socket (our right, Vader's left) looks black and the left (Vader's right) looks gunmetal. I also have this diagram and have been using it but it is hard to tell.

Keep in mind I am talking about the lower half of the eye sockets. The upper half of both sockets look gunmetal to me.

If you look at darthjones' excellent ANH lid, you'll notice that this is indeed the case. Here are pics of it which, to me, evidences this, from Jez's site:

Excellent, that's exactly the way I masked off my helmet. I thought it was like that but didn't know for sure. Thanks.

WOAW... I'm blind or something, but both lower eye-sockets look black to me. The eyelid on the right eye (left in picture) has exactly the same look as the black part of the cheek, which looks greyish in the first picture due to lighting I'd reckon, but definitely not as bright grey as the gunmetal color. Or am I looking at the wrong thing?

Would love to hear more opinions on this.

I think the first picture above provides the best shot to show that the lower right (Vader's left) eye socket is black. Look closely.

Yes, that is black... but from what I can see... so is the other.

Now that I know which bit your talking of it's one colour for each side, the curvature on the bottom socket gives an illusion of both being black but they are not. It looks darker gunmetal but is in fact the same as it's angles that play a part.
Some people spray the whole helmet black or gunmetal at first and then mask of the other section, on my helmets It's one colour for each

Hmm... nowhere else do they gunmetal have that color as is seen on the right lower eye brow. The only color corresponding to that one is the black on the cheek and on the edge of the flange of the dome. If this is merely caused by the angle giving the grey a darker look... then I'd be surprised.

Can we get anyone who has held this helmet to confirm that it is actually grey and not black?

I would urge you guys to NOT look at fan painted pieces for reference as they could be wrong ;)
Best to look at the movie or ref pics of the real stuff when trying to make these determinations.

Chris,
Yeah i think Gino is correct definately look an actual ANH pic,
and from all the reference shots i've seen i'm inclined to lean more
towards both eye sockets being full black top and bottom...

To me just from an optical illusion standpoint, if you make one grey, then hes gonna look like he has 2 different sized eyes...

lazy eyed sithlord? :p

Gino just tell him, grey or black... :rolleyes

I think he is trying to tell you black... or confuse you.

I'm no vader expert by far, and DK im sure youve stared at the mask more than I...

But my gut is tellin me, both were black. B)

Now someone please give him a SOLID answer so he doesnt have any regrets, Chris has put alot of time and love into this suit.

Thanks Ken. I have indeed put a lot of effort into the suit and have given a lot to the Vader community in the way of HD Vader caps and was hoping for a straight up answer.

Gino, I have studied all my HD caps and maybe I'm color blind or something but I still can't tell definitively. I have referenced all my books and one looks black and the other gunmetal to me.

I have already painted one gunmetal and left one black. This can easily be changed however, simple matter of doing the black with a brush. I would indeed appreciate a solid answer.

Al, thanks for your post. I appreciate that. I missed that before I posted the above. :) Do you mean the tops and bottoms of both sockets or just the bottoms?

Sorry, I didn't mean to give such an ambiguous answer.
I just wanted to encourage people to look for themselves and not rely on anyone else's opinion..including mine.

My opinion is that both the upper and lower sockets are both black.

Both tops are black.

The left bottom socket is gunmetal, the right bottom socket is black.

(on mine). :p
