Andy's Toy Story Toybox

My son is a huge fan of the Toy Story series. He is in need of a toy box and Christmas is just around the corner. I am a decent wood worker and I am thinking about taking a crack at Andy's toy box. The paint job is what I fear the most. Thoughts?

Here is one:

Well its definitely a beautiful piece. I would probably suggest oil paint and use oak tag, tape, etc. to stencil/mask the design. It would take a while, color by color, piece by piece, but unless you have a good eye for painting already, doing so cleanly and evenly as a beginner without guides is tough. Also, start with the background and move your way forward. Paint the green on the top, then the blue, then the darker outline of the mountains, then the lighter shade on the mountains, then the wheels, then the spokes, etc. Obviously, wait for each color to dry before moving on.

Best thing about something like this is the fact your doing for your son. No matter how it comes out he will enjoy it. While I can paint very well myself , if it where me I would still lay it all out in illustrator and get it printed to the size i needed ( the three sides) and then paint the top by hand due to the look for the canvas faux finish. It would help capture that cartoony look that type of movie is known for .
Something like that would be very easy to layout on illustrator

That is such a great idea!
Now what you have to do when you finish it is to fill it up with all those great new 'replica' versions of the toys that Thinkway has released!
I got most of them and they are exceptional!
I can't wait to see how your toybox turnes out - that should be a fun one to bring into the 'real world'

I know a printer in Louisville that can print pictures directly onto most any flat surface -- so if you sent them the wood (in flat panel pieces) and pics, they could print it directly onto the wood and send it back to you for assembly. A thought. I can lok them up if you wish to pursue this and get you contact info.

Or you could have it printed on giant vinyl decals and apply it -- but this might cost a bit.

Would it be considered a bad idea to make the wagon wheels and other wooden parts "3D" and have them "raised" away from the box? You could use some prefabricated wheels and attach them with screws and stock trim for the parts of the wagon. I think that would look better in my humble opinion, and would likely be more durable than a decal or paint also. Anyway, that's my suggestion. I hope you go through with this project and post pictures when finished!

Do you have a chest to paint? If not, I've been in Michael's and HobbyLobby a few times and seen chests this shape - I think you might have to remove some of the ornamentation 9some of the chests have leather straps around them or metal buckles in various places, but those should be easy to remove and fill with wood putty or bondo.

BTW, that watch clock hanging on the wall would also be something fairly easy to make - you can find the Micky Mouse clocks and all you'd need to do is create the watch band and paint it blue...

I have tackled stuff like this before, and for a $40 investment I found a small B&W projector at Michaels Crafts. You could then print out the image and project it to the wood tracing every detail.

Just a thought.

Not a bad idea at all, not very accurate though, although I doubt my 4 year old would care! I would be scratch building the box.

Would I have to find pictures or screen caps that are straight on to do this?

This got shelved for a Christmas present, but I may be reviving it for his birthday this spring.
