And so it begins. Another R2 is started

Hi all

After having a few spares moments today, I started making bits for my R2 unit. As I am making it all myself, I decided to make the bits that will be attached to the main frame first, so the frame can be made round the parts.

So today I made the computer interface arm. I used the plans from astromech but just altered the end part slightly as it didnÂ’t look quite the same as the screen grabs from ANH dvd.

Anyway as I couldnÂ’t find out how it should be fixed on, I decided to make up my own system. I took the arm, and made a pivot, which will be cable operated. Its quite simple as the cable will pull down and the arm rise up. I am trying to avoid air powered, as I can then just make one of the body charging sockets on the droid to come off and a real charger plug into it. This saves having to open it to remove or charge the battery. I added a few lines to one of the pictures to show how the cable will pull on the arm and raise it up.

The arm also comes apart for ease of installation, and if later on I make a different arm, it can just be swapped over as in the DK star wars book it shows a different computer interface arm. The end bit when done will also slide in and out like in the film.

This is just the master so when a mould is made, it will be pressure cast in polyurethane resin, then airbrushed with aluminium paint. I also found some 99.5% aluminium content paint today in the local car shop, so will try that for effect.

I also started on the coin return bits and main body vents, but ran out of time. Will have another bash tomorrow afternoon on those.

Don.

Looks like a great start. I'm hoping to make one of those arms eventually too. Yours looks stellar. Please keep us posted. Start a blog or something.

Too many new R2's on the scene lately... I'm so jealous.

I gotta stop spending all my money on Vader and get some R2 stuff. :)

It's an online journal - a web-log - where you can write personal stuff or updates on projects, afaik.

Looking forward to seeing more of your R2. :thumbsup
