Anck Su Namun - The Mummy Returns - Completed (for now)

Thought I'd make a post completion thread on my Anck Su Namun fighting costume from The Mummy Returns.

I will say that I also used the thread from RPF user AJLoCascio for some info.

This costume has been upgraded several times since I started it in 2021. I've since upgraded the skirt, belt, jewelry, armbands, and wig.

I'll break up the posts by costume pieces. Also, I have a Pinterest board for all my reference images. https://www.pinterest.com/nicoleseb23/anck-su-namun-fighting-sai/

First will be the skirt.

I found a knit fabric, dyed it, and hand sewed the darker stripes into the fabric. I used hooks-n-bars to close it in the front and sewed a ribbon to the back of the top edge for a bit of stability.

The beads for the skirt and belt are pretty easy to find. I found nearly the exact beads at Michael's.

I also used a tie dye kit to dye the black stripes for the belt.

This post will be the mask.

I haven't made any upgrades to the original mask I made other than to add a magnet to the inside between the eyes and to the inside of the wig so it can sit on top of my head without falling off.

I started with a regular Mardi Gras style mask. I painted it and added a puffy paint border for the raised edge detail. I created the fans from Worbla and glued them to the sides of the mask. I also cut off the top forehead and added the ribbon band.

I don't have a good photo of the "rope" detail on the mask but I used a braided rope trim easy to find on Etsy. I cut them to length, painted them gold, and added end pieces to them to prevent fraying. Then I just hot glued them into the mask. The ropes are not attached to the band behind the head to allow it to lay nicely when it's on my head.

Next is the top.

This top has been replaced since I made the original.

I had left over fabric from V1 and used that. This is a knit cut out fabric I found on Etsy back in 2021. I just spray painted it gold.

The screen used costume used long beads for the edges but I couldn't find something in the right length and color so I used this trim instead. They're more of a sequin and not a bead but the spirit is there.

The jewelry on the top was also easily found at Michael's. Although it was in 2021 and they may not have them anymore. I repainted them and I added the beads and dangles with more Michael's beads and leather cord. I believe these were added as weights so the top doesn't fly up.

Let's do the arm and leg bands next.

Both have been upgraded from my original.

I commissioned the armbands from @ceredircosplay @paf3d on IG. They're amazing and I've done several commissions with them now. I printed and painted them.

I don't have close ups of the leg bands but I used a maroon/gold cording I got from Etsy. I added caps to the ends to prevent fraying and beads. I'm trying to figure out a way to close them to keep them from untying. They have to be tied a certain way and because of the cording, they don't stay tight. So I find myself having to re-tie them throughout the day and it's quite annoying. I did add a photo below of the cord I used and the tie from Imhotep's arm that is the same as Anck's.

The wig next!

I once again just upgraded this from the first iteration of this costume.

I found a wig from bezos.com and had my husbands dad cut it to length. I couldn't find a wig with the correct bang and length. Cleopatra wigs were all too short for my needs.

This is the link to the wig Amazon.com

I added gold bands and braided sections and a magnet with hot glue to the top for the mask.

The bracelets are also an upgraded addition. They're just painted leather with leather cord ties. Easy peasy.

And finally, here's the photos from C2E2 this year of the current costume with all the upgrades! These photos were taken by @studioprysmphoto on IG. She was an absolute joy to work with! We shot these at golden hour and the sun was stunning giving us that golden tone for the desert. I was FREEZING in actuality. hahaha. As is typically the case.
