AMT Enterprise D Buildup: WIP Page 3!

The Ent D is my favorite starship of all time, but every kit I've seen has some problem or another. Basically, I want to build an accurately detailed Ent D with all lighting, from nacelles to dish to windows to formation lights, and I want it to be big. I wish I had the cash to preorder REL's fantastic build before the run was canceled, but oh well, such is life.

Which kit would you guys recommend for me? Bandai? AMT with upgrade parts? Fiber optic AMT kit? Saucer separation is of no concern to me, it'd be displayed complete. Stand doesn't matter either, I want to build my own.

Any and all recommendations are highly appreciated.

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

If you haven't already, you should post this question on the Starship Modeler forums:

http://www.starshipmodeler.net/talk/index.php

You should be prepared to get a variety of options, but I think this is your best chance to get what you're looking for. I'm not saying RPF members aren't knowledgeable, but SSM is specifically for sci-fi kits, so your odds of success are increased.

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

Great to find another fan of the D! :cool

Diamond Select has one scheduled for its toy line, it looks to be pretty good. Only about 16 inches long though. But there will be "regular" and "All Good Things" versions!

The AMT kit is one of the frew options that are out there. There's a large BRASS model, made in the Nineties by a company called "Master Replicas" (not the same one :lol) which is a pretty nice size. I have one but it's in need of repair and repaint. This one is about 27" long.

I was fortunate to be able to photograph the 6-foot miniature of the D, at the Christies auction in 2006. Great reference pics! :cool

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

Zombie, I have the distinct problem of being a lurker before posting. I have to read through threads and soak up info before posting. I think it was about a year after I signed up here that I made my first post! :lol

I'll definitely browse the boards, though. Hopefully someone else will have asked the same question. :thumbsup

Phase, I saved most of your Ent D pics a while ago in anticipation for this project, they're fantastic! It was also saddening to see the abuse the thing has suffered since it was used in Generations... looked like some ******* spilled coffee on it, right before someone gave it a swift kick in starboard. :(

I'm excited about the DST Ent D, but there's nothing quite like building it up yourself.

I've seen people modify the AMT kit with open shuttlebays and the like, but I basically want a miniature version of the filming model, without extra doodads like sound. Actually, I'd settle for a full-scale replica of the miniature too. :lol

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

Hey Neon,

I don't know if it would be cool enough to tide you over for a little while, but I have an ERTL/AMT Enterprise D that is already built and has been all set up for lighting. The COOL part about this model is that the person who built it was Michael Dorn's stand in as Worf for several seasons on The Next Generation, and Generations. He gave me the model after the top of one of the nacelles was lost and he didn't have the motivation to get a replacement part. He did a really detailed job on it and it has just been sitting. If it sounds cool to you, and you want to just finish it up, it is ready for lighting and everything. I can take some pics and you're welcome to it. I figure that might be something cool to display until you have a larger scale Ent D to build and display later.

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

While that sounds really cool, I think I only have the cash right now for the original kit itself and a jury rigged lighting system. Thanks for the offer, though.

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

Double post!

Are the nacelle parts, deflector dish and impulse engines on the standard AMT kit cast in translucent plastic in their respective colors, clear plastic, or are they opaque?

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

If someone were to make a 1:1000 scale beastie as a kit, and if done with quality, I am certain it would sell like crazy. At one point, Richard (REL) and Max were looking into doing a whole starship line in 1:1000. However, I think other than fighters, he has upped his game to the ultra large stuff.... :D It's too bad he doesn't have a staff, or we would probably see some incredible kits of all scales! ;) :love

Phase... I remember the brass one... pretty nice piece... and pretty rare. Nice for collectors indeed! :D

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

I remember seing the brass one in Starlog years ago. There were in progress shots of it and some final beauty shots. I thought it was bigger than that though.

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

The Master Replicas 95 is pretty big, note the dollar bill on the table in my pic.
Here's a construction shot that I had in my files.

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

Don't be too jealous... mine needs some work. :lol

Got it with a makeshift stand, and nonworking electronics. :unsure

What really kills me tho, is prior to that, I WON a minty one off ebay but the guy just refused to send it to me! :angry

Didn't take my money, just refused to let me have it. I won the auction but he said it didn't go for as much money as he had wanted. But I had won the auction. :lol

Sigh.

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

Welp, just nabbed myself an AMT off of eBay, should receive it in the next couple days to figure out how I'm going to handle the lighting.

I've got craploads of LEDs and fiber optic cabling to use, it's wiring all that gear up that's going to be tricky, especially lighting the nacelles. It's an extremely thin area, and I'm unsure how to get any power in there. Once I have the kit in hand I'm sure I'll think of something, but I don't want to have to wreck it's integrity for the sake of pretty blinking lights.

Hopefully all of this will get the Ent D bug out of my system long enough to save up for a kit in a larger scale. :)

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

I feel like such an impatient n00b with all this double posting, but I can't help it, I swear!

There are a lot of gold looking bits on the ILM model's illuminated parts, primarily on the nacelles and deflector. Were these parts simply lost in the glow, was the colored lighting "bounced" off of these parts from separate light sources during mo-co filming, or was it something else like vacuum metallizing?

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

Karl, as you might remember, I had one of those big-D replicas as well. I sold it some years ago as it needed a lot of work that I didn't feel like doing. It was NICE, but it wasn't GREAT. It would need about 100 hours of super-detailing and structural work to become a really good model.

eg; large gaps between the brass parts, no markings for the lifeboat hatches, no "aztecing", etc...

And for the record, it was made by MASTERPIECE REPLICAS.

I still have all of the paperwork.

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

The ridges along the nacelles were a gold/copper color on the model. The blue light "blew them out" in photography/compositing. There are a few shots during the series with the engines off where you can see the color.

They did shoot lights in separate passes, on film, but the compositing was done on video. A higher resolution compositing job might've enabled more of the gold/copper to show through.

BTW, I don't have a lighting system but I could sell you my unfinished build of the AMT kit.

Re: Enterprise D: Which Kit?

Thanks for the info, everyone!

The kit should be in my hands in a few days, does anyone have suggestions for accurizing the thing? I'm sure some areas have to have some scratchbuilt detailing added on, but is there anything I'd have to reshape, or scribing I'd have to do?

This may be a step between a larger, better model down the road, but I still want this to look as good as it can without going overboard with opening shuttlebays and the like.
