Aluminium/brass blacking

I've got a 50ml pot of each and basically want to know how best to use it.

With such a small amount can it be diluted? Do you dip/sponge/brush it on? Can you reuse used fluid? etc.

I used either a Q-Tip or a rag. For the darkest parts (like the emitter ring), I used a rag and basically scrubbed it on. For the lighter stuff, I dipped the qtip directly in the bottle and rubbed it on, but in doing it this way I had to do several 'coats' to get it to look random. Here are my results:

Be sure that what ever you are treating does not have a clear laquer coating and that it has been cleaned of all oils even handeling will prevent areas from darkening correctly. Learned this the hardway.
