Almost had it... Edge Connectors

Recently I have been on a quest to find a better edge connector for my ESB Graflex build. Though my gears really got moving when the Ranch Graflex was finally put on display. Please pardon me if I am borrowing your image, I have just been collecting them for a while.

It immediately became apparent to me what MR was up to with their replicas. Observe the almost white board and the thin tin fingers. Also, the gold extends into the thinner portions. You can see a tiny bit of the extra board on one side, as the gold fingers were never centered when cut down to 2 inches.

When comparing both the Barbican Vader and the Ranch Graflex edge connectors, it would appear as though they originate from the same part.

Here is one I just got in the mail when I took a chance and ordered from Twin Industries:

Too bad there are those extra holes.:thumbsdown

I was hoping for some more input. Observe the closeup of the Barbican saber clamp.

You can see there are tiny letters just hidden beneath the clamp. Also, you can see one fat tin finger top as well. This would seem to reveal that this may have come from a manufactured component. Though, I confess my search has focused largely on prototyping boards.

Unfortunately I have already misplaced my genuine edge connector I recently purchased from Nexus 6. While the tin fingers were way too thick it does have that real gold look. Here is Nexus 6s photo of the part before my purchase:

While the MRs are the most accurate in shape and board color, it looks they choose to cut corners on the gold finish. Supposedly the ESB replicas featured a real gold coating, but it was quite pale. The recent V2 replica edge connector is much darker, but compared to a real edge connector their gold coloring looks like a yellow sharpie pen. I'll try to get some photos of the 2 for a comparison but I've recently moved and haven't unpacked everything just yet.

I'm still hoping to track down something better. Anyone know of a piece of equipment with the hp44 bus standard? If not it may be time for me to have some replicas manufactured for the RPF.:thumbsup

Please keep us updated on your search Paul. As my all real parts Luke ANH gets closer to completion (finally got the balls to file down my calc bubbles yesterday) I am already thinking ahead to a real ESB! I would love to find a real edge connector. I knew joining this forum would be a bad move for my wallet. I've got some initial plans for a custom blaster in the works too. :wacko

Hey a reply!:thumbsup

Stay tuned. I'm about to blow this thing wide open... maybe.

It might not be an HP-44bus standard at all.

Unless I am overlooking something, which I could be, these should be quite easy to etch and I have a pen plating machine which is what is used to plate the gold or tin on the edge connections. Most pc boards are copper so this may be what is looking like gold and the thin traces could be plated with tin. I also have a couple of gallons of pc board etchant laying around. If someone will do the artwork to scale in illustrator or corel I can use it to burn my masks with. I use a heat transfer mask I make with my laser printer.

I can prepare an illustrator file. So most boards are not actually gold but a copper?
