I had seen this in an advanced screening last Thursday but wanted to wait till I digested the film properly to say anything, but...
Great movie! One of the most enjoyable experiences I had watching a movie in theater that I've had in YEARS.
I loved the story and really didn't have any issues with pacing or plot. Was some of it a tad rough? Yeah but not any worse then the original.
I liked the Daft Punk cameo, I know people had an issue with it but come on, it was Daft Punk playing MP3 programs that played Daft Punk. What were they SUPPOSED to look like? XD At least they didn't like have them randomly join in the fight in that scene. XD
Which reminds me, I haven't enjoyed listening to a soundtrack this much in YEARS. I guess seeing as how little I've enjoyed a movie in the theater and how uninspired movie soundtracks for those films have been, this should be a good indication how much I enjoyed this film as a whole.
Great seeing Bruce Boxleitner again. He aged pretty darn well.
Were there some plot conveniences? Sure but at least I didn't feel they were shoved too hard at me and they were acceptable in the realms of a sci-fi film for me. Also, I didn't feel they were trying to "Send an important message" like too many films try to do. There was some Zen stuff and metaphysics but it wasn't trying to make the movie MEAN something more it was just there for the character development. I'm sure someone better than I can read into the symbolism more but for me I didn't feel like they were trying to force it so hard that i felt i was missing something. In other words i didn't feel like they were trying to be smarter than their audiences and wind up alienating them instead of impressing them.
CGI young Jeff Bridges...well, when it worked it worked well, very well. when it didn't OHHH MAN! XD It was the mouth that looked the most off the most often for me XD
One thing I loved was the differences in the worlds of both movies they were in. The 82 film was very of it's time in that video games back then were very blocky. The games back then, the little planes and such on the screen, well, you didn't see what made them go because they were limited to the graphics of that time and the game physics were very much like in the 82 movie in that they weren't like anything in the real world. Lightcycles could corner 90 degrees and the occupant didn't feel it. It didn't of course work that way to the real people on screen because the actors were of course. The new film was more detailed but much like modern video games the designs were more fleshed out. you could see the Lightcycle engines, tires and controls, the Recognizers had a more definitive function to their construction complete with engine thrusters in the legs. They followed a more modern version of video game physics and graphics and it was neat the way they did it.
I liked the pacing BTW. I know a lot of people like a faster paced film but I think this was paced very well for my tastes as it gives me a little more time to process what's going on without hitting me constantly with scene after scene of action with no substance so that I can't catch my breath.
In all there were a few flaws but nothing to detract from the good aspects of the film so that the good aspects might as well not be there if i have to wade through a ton of crap to see them. I really enjoyed this film a lot!
