ALIEN: ROMULUS News And Updates!

This was the first time I’ve seen it in theater and was so glad for the opportunity to. Really had a great time sharing this first time theater experience with my daughters too.

Did anyone else’s theater show it not the full screen ratio size? I thought it was just the interview with Fede and Ridley but then the whole movie was like that.

Also, I wish they had stayed away from showing clips of the movie during the interview. Obviously it didn’t ruin or spoil anything but kind of took away from seeing those scenes for the first time on the big screen, for me anyways. First world problems..

Do you mean it was NOT shown in 2.20:1? My showing was definitely 2.20:1. Might even have been 2.35:1 like the 70mm prints.

It looked fantastic though. I caught the 40th anniversary screening in 2019 and this time it looked noticeably better. I have to also say, Sigourney Weaver should have been nominated for best actress. I looked up the nominees for that year and while I haven't seen any of the movies in the best actress category to give a fair assessment, it's hard to imagine they had to convey the range that she did. Outstanding performance.

I’m not sure what ratio it was but it did not fill the screen. It was like watching a widescreen movie on a widescreen TV but still left the bottom and top bars.

It looked fantastic though, and was happy enough for the opportunity to see it on the big screen.

Yeah, it's just that most theaters don't have wide enough screens. My theater was the same albeit it's a fairly wide screen so it was only a bit of space at the top and bottom.

Alien cover band plays the hits.

>shrug<

Uninspiring, but might be entertaining. I'll catch it when it hits one of my streaming services.

so basically Alien but more graphic. Nah, im good.
Agree with both of you. I watched the trailer and felt it was pretty “meh”. Those Alien movie shorts that were being done a few years ago on YouTube were done better.

Also…why would you show characters getting face hugged in the trailer? Yes, we know it’s going to happen especially us Alien fans, but FFS leave some mystery to it before it comes out.

Ridley Scott said it was ‘great’ and James Cameron apparently liked it as well, so there’s that. ;) Of course, Scott is a producer on the film. Either way, he’s not known for holding back opinions or mincing words. There’s a lot to consider here; I remain optimistic for now.

Yeah, I mean, I'm not saying it looks bad. It just looks like more of the same. Which is fine. I like that stuff. I just don't think it warrants a theater ticket.

The thing about alien movies is that you basically have two directions to go to make it interesting, and third kind of direction to go to keep it mildly entertaining.

1. You can use the inhumanity of the alien to heighten the humanity of the humans and explore that. Alien does this. It's a monster eating people, but the way those people are depicted in the film is really, really, relatable, and as a result, you actually care when bad stuff happens to them. Aliens takes the concept, flips it around a bit, turns it into a war movie, and then highlights Ripley and her humanity with her connection to Newt. Even 3 does a sort of ok job at this, although it's annoying that it tosses out everything that came before.

2. You can delve deep into lore, again, with an eye towards examining the nature of humanity in contrast. To some extent, Prometheus does this, although I find the human characters less believably human. Still, the notions of "Who are these creatures that created this stuff? What were they doing? Why were they here? If they made us, why did they make us, and what does that imply about us?" are really interesting. Prometheus is, I think, super interesting in concept, and just kinda weak in execution because it seems like it can't decide which direction to go.

3. You can double down on what came before and basically just delve into gory kills, new alien types, etc. with no real purpose other than "Hey, if ya liked those first ones, you'll love this!" Just about every beat is recycled, you've seen it all before, it's just a slight twist. That's Alien: Resurrection. And I get the sense that's what this is. I mean, it'll likely be more horror and less action that A:R, but it still feels like it's gonna be, you know, "You've seen all this before, but here's a minor update." Covenant is kinda like this, too, come to think of it.

To me this movie has a big "Been there. Done that." feel to it. It just looks like they're cashing in on the franchise. I also have to ask again where in the freaking heck are the Marines, which are some of the coolest characters in this franchise? I'd rather watch more of the same with Marines blasting Aliens than a bunch of 20 somethings who escaped from The Hunger Games, Divergent, Twilight, etc.

What do you WANT?

Serious question.

Each time a trailer comes out for something, i hear alot of the same things:

"Ehh... I'm good",

"Looks boring"

"Rehash City"

First of all, how do we know? I mean...we do an awful lot of bellyaching about "not showing the whole film in the trailer (I support that), but then it never occurs to us that maybe they're showing us the familiar bits in the trailer precisely to whet the appetite for more, while not showing us the pivotal stuff ya'll say you don't want spoiled in the first place?

It just seems like a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to be so cold fish about it. i think becoming jaded is far more common after all of the bad films we've been given over the years, but listening to Fede Alvarez and his obvious love and reverence for the two films in this franchise that we all can agree are by far the best... don't we think it's worth keeping an open mind, and maybe--just maybe--forking over a few bucks to support a director who at least respects what you love, instead of all of those in Hollyweird these days who clearly do not?

The story--as it's been parsed out so far--is that this takes place on a different "shake and bake colony" world, and the protagonists are seeking to escape said colony. The meeting with the alien(s) is pure accident, and the station that they are on appears to have been isolated or abandoned in space.

So there would be no story-driven reason to have marines all of a sudden just show up.

Additionally:

** I'd rather watch more of the same with Marines blasting Aliens than a bunch of 20 somethings who escaped from The Hunger Games, Divergent, Twilight, etc.**

OK... so you ARE OK with rehash, as long as it's the rehash you like? That seems a bit hypocritical.

Also, we don't know that they're "teenagers who escaped Hunger games, twilight, etc..." JUST BECAUSE they are young people. that is a HUGE assumption to make based on the very scant dialog and sequences in this trailer. Maybe they WILL be lame kids.. but we don't KNOW that now, so it seems short sighted to just leap to that conclusion and then dis the whole thing based upon a straw man position.
