Alien: Covenant (Prometheus Sequel)

Re: Paradise (Prometheus Sequel)

What I was saying about the name change is that I believe that was used to cover-up the fact that they were actually shooting Paradise. Also I really hope 10/11/12 signifies something more than the DVD + Bluray release because that would be so disappointing.

Re: Paradise (Prometheus Sequel)

Ah, got ya. The title Paradise felt logical too. Its a lot of biblical stuff in it.

Re: Paradise (Prometheus Sequel)

I really hope SRS doesnt listens to the haters, and keeps it true of his vision and the symbolic storytelling from Prometheus.

Haters aside, what about those who just have simple criticisms? Or is Ridley Scott a man of such stature that he's above any form of criticism?

Re: Paradise (Prometheus Sequel)

There are definitely problems with the film but most people went to go see the movie with their brains safely locked away at home.

Re: Paradise (Prometheus Sequel)

Idea: Shaw gets to the Engineers homeworld, and they actually LIKE her! As in "Maybe our experiment on that planet should continue on"....

...up until they get a load of Weyland Corporation.

By that point, it'd probably Weyland-Yutani (as from what we find out from Vickers in the film, they spent trillions of dollars in the mission. With that big of hit, and the fact that they also lost both Weyland and Vickers in the mission, Yutani may take advantage of the company's major losses and pull a merger and Wayland Megacorp may accept it because they have no other choice).

Re: Paradise (Prometheus Sequel)

Was Prometheus really THAT expensive of a movie to shoot? It didn't look cheap but it didn't look too expensive to me either. I think it's easy to overestimate the expense of the movie just because of the status of the project's ingredients.

It is estimated to have cost about 180 and that is including advertisements. It made well over 300 million though so it was a pretty substantial hit.

I didn't really take anything Vicker's said as truth. She was not really a scientist or anything other than a businessman so when she said it cost a trillion dollars, I think that was just a hyperbole, like it cost a ton of money. Also when she says that they are half a billion miles from Earth, she is just speaking like any normal person would, exaggerations and all.

Re: Paradise (Prometheus Sequel)

Well the conversation that Fassbender has towards the end is actually a lot longer, but was shortened.

I wouldnt totally dismiss Miss Vickers, she was the 2IC of Weyland Corp and the heir apparent. I think she put all that at risk to go on the journey to be with her father and not just watch over the Company assets. She wasnt just a cold machine. With the trillions of dollars aspect, perhaps the entire way they look at money/finance is totally different to our version, maybe there were a few more potent GFC`s between now and then. Imagine that exact mission in todays currency value, easily into the Billions.

Im really looking forward to SRS exploreing the Corporate side in the next one or finale. Did with think for a second that no one was going to follow up on the Prometheus disaster, the most powerfull man in the world and his daughter are for all intents and purposes, missing. Theres no certainty Shaws last message even made it back and would it really deter the Company?
A good chunk of the story could be set back on Earth before we even get to Shaw and David. Who do you think would play a good Yutani? I dont think the character being a women is canon to Scott. I`ll throw Ken Watanabes name out there.

We did get introduced to a Ms. Yutani in AVP:R for one scene (played by an actress named Francoise Yip, who played the Motorcycle Fighting chick in Romeo Must Die and one of Sister Willow's wives in two episodes of Caprica), though many think that Prometheus conflicts with the timeline presented with those stories, when it actually doesn't. Frankly, I wouldn't mind a woman playing the role (keeping with the female of the species being more dangerous than the male mentality that started as far back with Mother in the original Alien), but it'd have to be an excellent actress. Maybe Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh or Maggie Cheung. But, if it HAS to be a man, I don't see any problems with Ken Watanabe or Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (I'm not saying he'd be a great option, but a second option in case Watanabe isn't available).

Re: Paradise (Prometheus Sequel)

Oh, I remember that scene CB, I sat through the whole movie, wasnt impressed and right at the end there BANG, all my buttons got pushed at once, its where I wanted the film to start.:facepalm

Your right in the way you descibe a female Yutani, very appropriate. If Yutani`s Father/Mother is American/British etc it could open up the role to more actresses.

Maggie Cheung definitely falls into the Chinese/British area. She may have been born in Hong Kong, but spent her childhood and adolescence in Britain. As a result, she still has a British accent that you can hear when she speaks in English.

Prometheus to Alien: The Evolution | Prometheus News

Why is a Space Jockey on the Prometheus Chair? Er, nevermind.

There are definitely problems with the film but most people went to go see the movie with their brains safely locked away at home.

Of all the films that were released this summer, I think Prometheus would rank amongst the highest on the list of "films I want to see with my brain on". This was Ridley Scott doing another film set in the alien universe. The last thing any fan would want to do is not bring their brains to something that could be at the same caliber as the first two films. The issue I think Prometheus had with movie goers was that it gave us some pretty outrageous situations way too early and told us to take it seriously. If a story is going to ask the audience to get involved and take everything it has seriously, well, it's gotta meet me half way there by also taking us seriously.

One example of a science fiction film that did this well was the original Matrix movie. How do you get an audience to get involved in a story where we're all connected to a huge dream computer being controlled by machines that are using us for power and actually take it seriously? That's a pretty challenging task considering that you also don't want to drown your audience in so much philosophical jargon that you miss the point of the film, which is to be entertaining. The Matrix also introduced it's story and setting by putting the audience on the same boat as Neo. We know very little about what is going on, and when Neo learns about it, we as the audience learn about it with him. I mean, do you think the original Matrix movie would have been as good if the story literally opened by showing humans being plugged into a huge dream machine and that Neo fully believed he was in a simulation because some anonymous forum user said he was? Thanks to Prometheus' opening with the engineer dissolving into a water fall and showing DNA strands, the audience is already lightyears ahead of the characters because they spend most of the time figuring out stuff that we already know. And having a character like Shaw doesn't really help because she doesn't really have a journey. She already believes what the opening of the movie sets up before we even arrive at the planet, and later comes up with conclusions that don't make sense in the context of what we've seen so far.

If a sequel to Prometheus is going to work, it needs to do a lot of things differently than what Prometheus did.

She /he doesnt need to speak english at all really, Im sure that Yutani would be fluent in the language but prefers only to speak in Japanese to further intimidate those who deal with her/her, just thinking character traits.
Its been touted before that Wayland was only in it for himself but the Yutani side was militant about commercial prospects. Could be a plot driver. Would be a nice twist if Yutani got to speak with the Engineers when Wayland failed.

Well, Maggie can speak English, some Chinese and is fluent in French. I'm sure she can learn a bit of Japanese. I understand that the character, be it male or female, doesn't need to speak English at all, but I do agree with your mentality about the use of language as an intimidation method.

And the idea of Yutani being militant when it comes to the company, that would make sense. I can't help but think of the saying in the movie Rising Sun, with the saying "business is war" coming to mind. I do not know for sure if that is the real mentality of Japanese companies, but the saying definitely would fit the Yutani company's mindset.
