ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE Cinemas: Finally a theater that doesn't put up with texters...

I love the Alamo Drafthouse.

Oh, and last time someone decided to text message during a movie (not Alamo Drafthouse), I got this sudden urge to pee, stood up and "accidentally" knocked the phone out of their hands, then "accidentally" stepped on it. Whoops.

Although there was some teenaged punk sitting behind me once who decided to make an actual phone call during a screening of the Star Trek reboot (again, not the Alamo Drafthouse). I would have been perfectly fine if he had gotten up and walked out of the theater, but no, he decided to carry on his rather loud conversation right there in the theater... for all of a minute. I stood up, turned around, grabbed his phone, told the other caller that he'd have to call them back, then hung it up. He was, of course, rather indignant that I DARED to interrupt his phone call, but he didn't get a chance to say anything before I laid into him. Using my command voice (those who have been in the military know what this is), I told him "TURN YOUR <expletive deleted> PHONE OFF INSIDE A THEATER. YOU ARE RUINING THE MOVIE FOR EVERYONE ELSE. YOUR LACK OF COURTESY IN THIS THEATER IS AN ABOMINATION AND A POOR REFLECTION ON WHAT YOUR PARENTS SHOULD HAVE TAUGHT YOU." then threw his phone in his lap.

As the theater cheered, the projectionist stopped the movie and a couple of employees came in to handle the situation. I got booted from the theater along with the kid, but it was so worth it.

I have said before that I wish that theaters here in the US could be built like the ones I have heard about in China...they are constructed so there is no reception in the theaters.
No reception. No problems.
Want to use your phone? Go to the lobby.

But I'm a grouchy old man like that. I also think movies over 2 hours should have to have an intermission.

If they use the phone, I say puke on them AND their darn phone! (I can puke-at-will)
NO means NO!

You're inconsiderate if you text or worse yet call during a movie, but kids, if you start smashing or snatching people's property in movie theatre and yelling in their faces, you're likely to get yourself arrested, or worse.

Expelled!

See, I usually am fine with places banning Glass, but this... they're doing it based on the grounds of not distracting someone while watching a movie. Only the only person who would be distracted would be the actual user. This isn't like a cell phone where it causes distractions to others.

So I'm fine with someone saying they want to ban them from the establishment (don't agree with it, but it's their decision), but I have a problem with them saying it's for a reason that isn't relevant.

This is why I always go to movies at ArcLight - if you're always on your phone or just disruptive, one complaint and they kick you out; no tickets sold after movie starts, and they generally don't allow late entries about 10 min after show time.

I went to an AMC for Anchorman 2, and after sitting through a guy snoring in front of me, a couple that wouldn't shut up behind me, and someone who was having a phone conversation for about 1/3 of the movie... never again.

They need to make a big franchise out of this.. I want to always go to Alamo Drafthouse.

As for the Glass argument, I've never seen one in the dark.. it's possible they emit quite a bit of light, even if no one else can "see" what's actually on the display.

Nice to see that they are taking their time with the expansion. Always good to make sure you'll make it in a market before oversaturating your namebrand...
