Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build (NEW UPDATE 11/12)

Re: Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build

Governor- Thanks for the image, it helps a lot. Since I did the brace, I didn't think I needed the collar plates but it looks like I do.

Also, where in robo's templates is that piece that stuck up out of the back of the neck for support? I didn't see it anywhere.

I think the piece you are referring to is part of Robo's original pep files http://www.therpf.com/f24/robo3687s-iron-man-pep-files-sd-war-88147/#post1248179 - should be easy enough to foam it (neck seal).

Oh ok. It was for the paper version and not foam, that's why I didn't see it. Do you have any more pics on how to connect all the pieces together? I am stuck and can't figure out the neck seal, brace, collar plates, shoulder, and back connections.

Thanks.

Re: Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build

Can't anyone help me from my last post?

Small Update- Finished the collar plates. Put the suit together in a quick fashion to snap a photo to get the look of it so far but again, I don't know if that is right or not. I like it (Borat voice).

Thanks.

All I did for those pictures was take screen shots of the 3d pepakura window.
Open a file in Pepakura Designer: for example start with the brace (NOTE: always use Robo's original paper files, some of the models for the modified files for foam have been edited and don't line up) THEN under file click on import file (*pdo) and add the other parts one by one, then just move the model around using right click and if you hold down left and right mouse buttons together you can move the model left/right/up/down and then also zoom in and out with the scroll wheel. Then you can see what is supposed to line up where and connect.. hope that helps.

If you haven't purchased Pep Designer - you CAN still do this, you just can't use the save function..

Use the two small collar parts you have created to connect the chest piece to the back piece. The sides of the chest and back then also connect, although for at least one of the side parts youll want to create a velcro or snap lock opening to allow you to put the armor on. If you look at my thread (Page 2) there are a few pictures of the chest/back piece of armor on its own where its easy to see how they connect.

I didnt make a brace, but ones Ive seen are just glued to the inside of the chest and back, making the chest/back/brace one piece of armor.

The neck seal doesnt attach to any other pieces as you want to put this on before you put on the chest/back. You can however use small pieces of velcro to ensure the neck seal doesnt shuffle around too much, but it probably isnt necessary.

One thing that I noticed, is that your neck seal needs to go behind/underneath the weird pokey uppy part that sticks up out of the top of the spine. See page 4 of my thread where there is a shot of me wearing the armor from behind.

I see what you mean. Once I get home I will re-set it all back up and post my work. You guys can say yay or nay.

Re: Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build

I think that the entire neck seal actually goes underneath the brace.

I actually just tried that and it didn't work. Here's it all taped up without the seal though.

I'll try to take more and add them soon. I still need to figure out the neck seal lol.

Re: Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build

I think the issue with the neck seal is that the one you are using is originally from Dancin_Fool's MK3 - Everyone prefers the detailing on that neck seal and it looks good - however for it to fit with the MK4 from Robo3687 you need to tweak and adjust both the neck seal and the brace for them to fit or possibly merge them together - replace the head hole of the brace with neck seal from Dancin's files. Otherwise possible make Robo3687's neckseal which is designed to fit with the brace etc or.or.or.or.or. the templates are just really good guide lines but tweaking and personalising it what separates your suit from everyone elses..

Re: Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build

Excellent discussion, gentlemen! I've been pondering this very subject as I'm finishing more parts. I used 2mm foam for the neck seal for comfort, mobility, and to ensure it fits through the brace. Thanks so much Governor for taking the time to post the assembly screen captures. A pic is worth 1,000 words. Remember that IM armor is based on historical armour, so there are a lot of bits that go on before the armour (e.g. neck), then the squire would help install the heavier parts over the top, creating overlapping layers. This perspective has helped me a bit figuring out how to assemble IMMIV.

I did use Robo3687's neck seal though, at least, that's what it said. I will look for Dancin_Fool's .pdo tonight and take a crack at that one. If push comes to shove, I could always make JFCustom's as well. I will play around with it and get it the way I want.

Thank you for the help.

I am going to try and build a different neck seal from a different creator and if that doesn't work, then I'll switch the foam size. I think 10mm is too thick for the neck seal.

Re: Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build

Hey HeyMcFly88
I had a look at Stealth's thread for the MK4/6 foam files which are the ones you are using (I think) and on the first page the original link is correct in saying that it is dancin_fool's neck but the actual file when you download it is mislabelled as "iron man - neck - created by robo3867 - foam edit -stealth - a4 version.pdo" - Like wise for JF's foam pieces, the neck seal is also mislabelled as Robo's.
I have upload my re-arranged version of Robo's file for foam (I hope he doesn't mind)

A4 - - http://www.4shared.com/office/vjMEENdt/Neckseal_IM_robo3687_-_FOAM_-_.html

Letter - - http://www.4shared.com/office/M-QFW0JN/Neckseal_IM_robo3687_-_FOAM_-_.html

When I tested the neck seal ages ago I used really thin 2mm foam, it was nice and flexible but probably not very durable however it is a simple enough piece to redo if needed and thinner foam is the way forward.

There is a gap between the neck seal and brace that does need some individual tweaking to hide (where the arrow is pointing).

Oh ok. Thank you for the clarification and for uploading these files however, these are the pdf versions, do you have .pdo ones? Sorry for being a pain. :unsure

Re: Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build

Update time. I have built the left bicep and a new neck seal that fits and looks perfect. I am very happy with it. Thank you Governor. If anyone wants to make it, look up a couple post to where he posted the pdfs.

What do you guys think of the bicep? Is it too big or does it look proportional?

Re: Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build

Nice, glad it turned out decently. It's definitely not as detailed as the other neck file but it does what it is supposed to -

I actually like this piece better. The other neck seal had way to much going on below the actual seal and it would've been hidden under the brace anyway (since the neck seal goes on first). This one fits better and looks better IMO.

I am going to be making the right bicep and then have a go at the Sharkhead helmet by JFcustom.

Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build (Abs done)

Update time: Well I didn't do the right bicep or the helmet but I had a go at the abs and this time I used JFcustom's abs file and it was very easy to build especially with the larger pieces from taping the templates together.

Re: Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build (Abs done)

Another small update: I finally got around to doing the right bicep. I used a mix between Robo3687's files and JFcustoms and I think it was a little easier to do it this way.

I am currently working on the left forearm and I am doing it the same way, a mix between the two. Some parts are easier to make with one person's templates and vice versa. Who else does this? Mix and Matches?

Re: Air Force Iron Man Mark IV Foam Build (UPPER TORSO ALMOST COMPLETE)

For those of you still following along at home(hopefully some of you still are :)), I have completed the upper body. It has only taken me about 2 weeks to get to this point. My skills have improved 10-fold and I am really happy with how it is coming out so far.

I am going to re-do the entire left arm and maybe the left shoulder. I used a different template for those and they are slightly bigger than my right arm which came out way better. Plus, the left arm looks like poo.
