I'm a sophomore in high school who would love to make his own monster/sci fi creatures out of clay.

How would I go about doing this?

Welcome. Probably start by getting a few pounds of clay and a basic sculpting set and trying to sculpt something. I'd search on here for stuff like "clay sculpting", tutorial, etc. if you mean clay sculpts for animation, google up animation sculpting, armatures, etc.

Best to start by reading..and searching...and reading. Then post. ;). I know you'll find great info.

I started in Junior HS.

Trial and error is something you'll get very familiar with. Just keep practicing and it will come. I'd buy a bag of WED and just start something. Some people like to sketch what they'll make but I can do that to save my life. I like to let the clay tell me where it wants to be and what my final sculpt will look like. It comes with time.

Study anatomy, it is the basis of everything, even monsters and creatures.

If you've never done anything before I'd suggest going to your art class in school and asking if they have any extra clay. Since you're new keep to materials you have easy access to and see what you have a knack for and discover what you're drawn to. If you're interested in creatures and monsters, get yourself a generic styrofoam head and try sculpting something out of clay on top. Just play around for a bit and once you get the hang of sculpting you can worry about learning to mold. Being in highschool you'll have access to plaster of paris strips and paper mache, so I would start with things like that. Ask your art teacher if they know of any local sculpting classes you can take part in as a student. You'd be surprised how eager people will be to get you involved if you ask around.

Model making is also a great way to get an "eye" for proportions and details. Again use what's accessible to you, see what you can build out of cardboard and glue and force yourself to explore those materials before trying to jump into something like latex.

Would love to hear your progress as you develop, so post some pics and ask questions as you go.

Welcome to the forum tomchey. Your question is a little vague, so here is my thoughts for you: START with youtube and type "sculpting techniques" and wach the videos. Next, get some water-based clay, It's about $10-$20 for 50lbs. Make/buy some basic tools, kidney, rakes, loops, etc. dont know how to make clay modeling tools? Youtube has videos on that.

Come back and tell how it went, and be sure to post pictures.
