Well,
What can I possibly say ? Today, my journey has come full circle. Today, I received my Star Trek Maroon Officer's uniform made from all the original threads and materials.
Everyone has that one piece they have been looking for since they were a kid. For me, I am NOT a Trekker, but Star Trek II was in fact the first movie my dad ever took me to with ESB playing across the way. I barely remember the movie, but I remember just how heroic these figures were and when I first fell in love with the imagery of the maroon outfit.
Some years later, I even purchased my first what was thought to be a Star Trek maroon suit from Star Log magazine...to find out it was nothing more than the Lincoln patterns (hey, I was 9, how could I have known better)...Regardless, I learned how to sew because of this pattern with hell bent fury to make my first maroon. It was a felt (yes, felt) disaster but to my over active imagination it was enough and stayed with for years to follow (until I couldn't fit in it). Again, I am not a trekker and couldn't tell you what happened on DS9 or Voyager...but this suit was iconic to me for many many many years.
Fast forward to now and my quest to have recreated the perfect maroon officer was just as fiery as ever. I found the perfect sewer with the right skill, the original fabric...etc. etc. ....Then "Its a Wrap" auctions came along the realization set in : I am old enough, have enough money....and is certainly a plausible notion - to OWN an original, screen used maroon.
The idea was as exciting as frightening realizing that there are so few out there and prices keep soaring...then a friend stepped in and agreed to sell his to me for a great price. I will let him speak on his own behalf if he cares to reveal himself, but many of you know his collection and will probably figure out.
This is a Screen Used Star Trek VII Maroon outfit and was also used by Tuvok (Tim Russ) during the "Flashback" episode in Voyager (made famous by Captain Sulu's guest appearance)
Anyhow, today I received my uniform and years of searching and excitement was overwhelming. Today, I told my wife that if any prop were to be rescued from my collection, it would be that one for so many reasons past its monetary value.
Finally, I had to. I had to find out...I had to try it on - then nothing short of a miracle happened...it said "Shatner" inside .....no, just kidding, but the next best thing, it fit like a glove. I have had many suits made for me and am very particular about my dress shirts fitting. I am one of those bastards who pays more to have a shirt tailored to specifically fit me and know the differences between a European, french, American cut...etc. This suit fit me as if it was MADE for me...shoulders line up, the cuff lined up (and I have long arms!)...the snug was perfect.
To say this was a perfect transaction is an understatement. Without ado, I would like to finally share some pictures with everyone here :
