Re: A L I E N F I V E Neill Blomkamp's ALIEN movie

Ignore everything after Aliens. Make Newt the heroine. I'm in.

Yeah I woke up to an email from my friend saying "would you be jealous if I worked on this?:D " and linked to the news. (She's animated on Elysium and Chappie)

well not if I worked on it too! Looking into applying to edit.:thumbsup

I guess it could be ok if he follows the spirit of the first film. He seems capable of that with his visual style.
It could work provided that he keeps it as straight up suspense/horror/sci-fi.
But if he even attempts to infuse it with sociopolitical or philosophical themes (e.g. Elysium) it's going to be a big insipid wreck.
I'm also worried about his ability to write characters - which is his other major weakness.
I donno.

He'll be the seedy rep from Weyland-Yutani that has Ripley in stasis ...

Ah, so he'll be taking over the Paul Reiser role...

Apparently they asked John Hurt if he'd like to return, but he replied; "Oh no. Not again!"

I'm thinking they released the concept art and stuff just to see what sort of reaction they would get from the fans...

Yeah, I can't say I have been a huge fan of his films, Elysium could have been better. But hopefully working with established characters and in an established universe he loves will bring out his best.

It all depends who writes it with him. Elysium failed (at least from my point of view) because it had a weak story and poor dialogue and characters. It felt so radically different in style and content to District 9 I couldn't figure out why until I realized D9 was co writtten with his wife Terri Tatchell. Then it all made sense. D9 has a terrific emotional depth that Elysium simply lacked and that was written only by Mr B. Which is why I am hopeful that "Chappie" will be far more successful, it certainly seems to hit more character high notes in the trailer than Elysium because Terri T co wrote it with him. If they BOTH do A5 then I think it could be a far better production, though I really hope they just don't keep going over very old ground.

In Elysium, a bunch of poor Hispanics crossing the "Rio Grande" of space in rickety craft just to get proper healthcare in the promised land is such an offensively ludicrous image I think the film might have been improved if it was marketed as a comedy.

Thoughts:

Interesting. I've always thought that Alien 3 and Resurrection were fairly crappy films because they basically just took what was a cool premise...and either recycled it or made it over-the-top goofy. Neither was really satisfying to watch. I actually enjoyed the old Dark Horse comics better.

It appears that this film basically retcons Aliens 3 and Resurrection, too, if Hicks is alive and scarred. Ripley in an alien outfit is also interesting. Both of these could be direct references to Dark Horse's stuff (both are images from the comics). Ripley, for example, could use the disguise to hide in a hive on earth. Hicks could be trying to rescue her.

I'll be curious as to how they hand-waive away A3 and Rez, though. Was it all just a dream? Were they "simulations"? Or do we just say "Um...yeah....they sucked, so they don't count anymore. The end."

I don't really care either way, actually.

As for Blomkamp, I've actually only seen one of his films -- Elysium. It was diverting for a plane ride, but not a great film. I think the issue was that he was going a bit heavy-handed with "SOCIAL COMMENTARY" mixed with "Isn't this cool?" sci-fi images, but the particular blend of these elements felt...off. I agree that the film kind of lacked a heart to it. I didn't really care about anyone in it, so it just became disposable action scifi that took itself very seriously to me. Chappie looks more interesting.

It'd be nice if we could get a worth successor to Alien and Aliens. Especially if it ignores Alien3 and Rez.

Solo4114 Perhaps give District 9 a watch. I am surprised you have managed to avoid it for so long, unless it was intentional for some reason.

Not intentional at all. Just never got round to it, really. It sat in my Netflix DVD/Blu-ray queue for ages, until I said "Meh" and deleted it. Maybe it's on Instant now...

District 9 is really his signature work. His visuals are great and I like his use of light.
It's an impressive start. It does remind me of M. Night Shayamalan's Sixth Sense only in that Blomkamp is at risk of becoming another wunderkind struggling to top his first major feature.

Also the allegories in D9 aren't necessarily heavy handed and the characters are quite memorable. As for Shyamalan, though Sixth Sense was more widely acclaimed and successful, I will take Unbreakable over that any day.

This Alien sequel is now most likely to be released only after 2017 or 2018, while the Prometheus sequel is scheduled for a 2016 release.
