A handy tip - achieving clean, flat surface finish with smoothcast 300

This might not be new (It was for me), but I just tried this an hour ago and it worked so well I felt compelled to share.

I had a wooden block with a dent on one side. Thinking of ways to quickly fix it, it occurred to me Smooth-Cast 300 doesn't really stick to styrene. I mixed up a small batch, poured it on the block and placed a piece of styrene sheet on it, shiny side against the resin, a piece of sheet steel on top of that and clamped it in place. When the resin was almost totally cured, I removed the clamps and the styrene did come clean off leaving a neat surface of resin nicely bonded to the wood.

I can find many ways to use this, hope some one else does as well.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for when I logged on today.

I've been trying to figure out a way to make a hoverboard out of pink insulation foam, but skin it in resin to make it solid but lightweight. If the top and bottom were treated like this, the sides could easily just have a beveled trim attached to them.

Looks like I know what I'm going to be experimenting with very soon.

Thanks!

Thanks!

The resin forms a very thin film with the wood showing thru. I did it twice on the block since I posted and got a nice even white surface. This could lend itself to many things.

I also though of using a patterned sheet against the surface-maybe even do some sculpting/scribing on the surface to get that transferred to the resin. Might be beneficial to use a release agent in that case.
