a FOOSH GUN thread!

Now, I don't know if a board member sold this gun on ebay, or if one bought it, but I can say, I wanted it. I don't have any idea if it's the real deal, but the auction stated this was the original foosh gun design, but it was changed once it was on set. Here is the picture.

Can anyone verify if this is actually the original design, or just an unfinished production gun?

I am a big fan of the foosh gun, and it's counterpart rifle. Not just in the looks, but in the function. I think it was a pretty ingenious way to make a non-gun that had some sort of flash and function.

I don't have any decent pics of the rifle, so anyone here who may, feel free to post many, many pictures for me.

I have a very clean resin replica I bought many years ago. I love the thing.

It looks different to a standard Foosh gun - this pic of a stunt leached from Matt Munson's site (will remove if you want Matt):

Yeah the auction said they "added a slide". I just found it very curious looking and wondered if anyone knew for sure. :)

Thermalized Plastics worked on this film, he post here from time to time i'll give him a call and see if he can take a look at your post.

The gun was delivered to the Vancouver set without the slide. That part was added later on set.

I've sold two hero versions of this prop to private collectors, so I'm very familiar with them.

If someone's interested in buying a screen-used hero Foosh rifle, I have one available right now for $6500. No joke.

Phil

If I had $6500 I'd be all over it. Boy Howdy.

Dob't suppose you want to post a picture of it :D ?

You gotta tell us the whole story... :thumbsup

Was the Foosh above available from a seller in England?

Here are photos of the hero Foosh rifle I have for sale, plus a hero Foosh pistol now in a private collection:

Wow, thank you for posting these photos. :thumbsup I didn't realize how different the rifle was in it's design from the handgun. Interesting.

I got mine years ago from ebay, and if memory serves the seller was in Cali (for $16). Definately state side. It's a damn nice casting too, I didn't even have to clean a seam off of it, I just painted it.

Would LOVE to have those heroes. AH,. some day perhaps. :cheers

Okay. I thought the slide-less Foosh at the top of the thread was a hero. I sold a broken hero without the slide--via eBay--to a collector in England several years ago.

I believe I have a scanned original line drawing of the pistol somewhere, and it doesn't include the slide. If I can dig it up, I'll post it here.

Phil

I'm sorry Phil, I can't friggin read.

The seller of the above Foosh, I do believe WAS from the UK.

Don't mind me. :angel

Then that's probably the broken hero I sold. I tried to locate the plastic slide for the buyer, but I couldn't get hold of one.

Eventually, the other hero became available, and it had the slide. Interestingly, the slide on that gun had broken in half and was glued back together.

It's a resin-cast part attached to the top of the pistol.

The people who made the gun for the film were very disappointed to see the slide added to it later, as the original Ron Cobb concepts and subsequently produced hero guns were supposed to NOT look like typical firearms. By putting the slide on there, the pistol became much more "conventional."

Phil

Yeah, it certainly does look more like a real gun, but the addition of that part also gives it a visual balance that I kinda like. :D

Ron Cobb is a great designer. Big fan of his work. I wonder why no on ever published a book about him? Syd Mead gets all the press.. ;)

Ron's interviews on the quad set are among my favorite features on there.

Phil, are the hero guns made entirely of metals, except for that add on resin slide? Just curious really. I don't suppose you got to fire one of these hero's?

I assume that the rifle used on "Firefly" was a resin copy of the foosh rifle. It is kind of surprising that they never used the foosh guns in other productions.

The rifle was used in firefly?? :confused

Any idea which episode? I don't remember seeing it.
[/b]
Yes. The Alliance rifle in Firefly is a modified Foosh rifle.

I know they appeared in "Ariel."

The hero pistols are made of metal, bronze, plastic, and rubber (if I remember correctly).

Here's the rifle in "Ariel":

Wow, cool. Thanks again Phil. I never cared for those rifles actually. I thought they looked silly, too "lost in space" for Firefly. It's because of the front end of the thing. :D

Can't you just see Major West hiding behind a paper mache bolder with one of those? ;)

That said, I want to mention that I unabashedly love the old series. I used to watch it everyday as a kid, and one of the few times I ever got starstruck was meeting Mark Goddard in person. Great guy too.
