616 Mjolnir - Thor's Hammer

Update: As stated further down in this thread, I resculpted the whole head of the hammer, covering the Sculpty with QuikSteel. I was more aggressive with the weathering this time so the head looks positively ancient and the weight and sturdiness is much improved. Here are some pics of version 2...

I own one of the expensive, licensed Mjolnir props that Diamond Select makes but I was never really happy with it. In my opinion, the head is too small, the handle is too long and much too thick, and both the metal and leather look too new (even on the later battle damaged version). I had hope that with the Thor movie coming out, we would get THE definitive hammer but Hollywood redesigned Mjolnir for the movie and the early toy pics are kinda lousy. So I set out to make what would be my personally definitive hammer - one that looked weathered and ancient from thousands of battles with Frost Giants, Rock Trolls, and elemental Demons.

So here is how I "Forged" the hammer of the gods:
First I built the head out of cardboard (using the power of geometry). Then I cut a piece of wood dowel for the handle, making sure that when inserted it would run through the whole head for stability. Then I used super sculpty to cover the head and sculpt all the aged metal detail. To give the whole thing weight and strength, I filled the head with expandable foam that air hardens to a wood-like density. I wrapped the handle in real leather and used the tip of a hot iron to burn random groove marks to make the handle look worn. Last, I painted the head black; dry brushed it with flat aluminum, added some black wash and sealed it with a few coats of dull coat spray.

I seriously can't put this thing down. It looks bigger and meaner than what is on the market but is light enough to be fun to swing around (even by the thong). HAVE AT THEE!

that is simply amazing, I am working on one now but I can tell you it wil not be any where near as good as the one you have made. Its simply stunning.

Very nice work! Only thing I see missing is the INSCRIPTION on the head. ;)

As for the movie design... they've made a Mjolnir that works for the big screen, with added detailing that will help it look awesome when projected many times larger than life. I'm fine with the design of the movie version. :cool:thumbsup

@ Jack T Chance: I went back and forth on the inscription and finally decided to leave it out. In the comics, it is rarely seen, as the inscription only appears when the hammer is left "dormant" and someone other than Thor tries to lift it. I wanted my Hammer to look functional and the inscription made it feel more prop-like somehow. I alway's imagined the inscription would alter itself to translate into whatever native language the person looking at it spoke.

I'm Ok with the movie Hammer - fits the overall costume and set design. I just couldn't see myself spending another couple hundred on the replica they are sure to make. The images of the toy hammer (which I would have been interested in) show a thinned head instead of the symetrical block that Mjolnir has - kinda ruined it for me.

Noticed that the expanding foam I used to fill the head is shinking a bit. The two large faces of the head were bowed out just a bit when the hammer was completed a few days ago and now the have receded back to normal. Hoping the shinkage is normal and has stopped

That's an awesome looking hammer. Very nice job on the weathering. From the first pic I thought the head looked a little small. But it does look right. Much better than the other one.

I heard that some of those spray foams continue to expand a bit. I didn't know they shrunk though. I hope it doesn't shrink that much more.

great work! could you put up a template for the cardboard head pieces? i would really love to make one of these sweet hammers

I used Great Stuff Expanding Foam Sealant. I'm sure it is great for it's real purpose but it is giving me some issues, as it continued to shrink/recede over the past day or so. Now both the large faces of the hammer's head are noticeably bowed in a bit.

Anyone reading this know's that is just unexceptable. I wanted this to be my difinitive Mjolnir so it's time to go to work to make it "perfect". I'm planning to re-cover the whole head with QuikSteel compound to fill in the low points. It comes in a mixable 2-part "clay" you knead theme together. In about 20-30 minutes the comound cures hard and metal-like. It's supposed to be used to fabricate small metal parts or make plambing/auto repair. I won't have a lot of work time before cure but I sculpt pretty fast and have the fact that I'm really just sculpting imperfections in metal working for me.

Wish me luck - if this doesn't work, I'll be making another head from scratch.

My ol man god rest his soul had two items in his tool kit a seven pound sledge hammer and a miners bow saw With this he could have built a sky scraper:angel

Jannix, I did bake the sculpty covered head before filling with the foam. Unfortunately the sculpty has enough "give" to still bow in.

I'm about 50% done re-coating the whole head with QuikSteel - it is working out really well and now the cured parts have the cold feel of metal. I'll post pics when complete.

Thanks clarence.
