3D Printing Gimli's Walking Axe from the LOTR Movies.

I have recently started 3d printing Gimli's walking axe from the Lord of the Rings movies. I found a model of the axe here https://grabcad.com/library/gimli-s-walking-axe-lotr-lord-of-the-rings-1. I proceeded to cut up the axe into pieces that would fit on my printer. I added a hole up the center of the handle that a dowel rod could be inserted to provide a location for fitting together and gluing. I also added pin holes to hold the pieces in place so they wouldn't be twisted. Here are several pictures I have taken that show the progress of the axe. All pieces are printed and glued together. I have begun the finishing steps and have a lot of sanding work to do to get this smooth. I will continue to post updates as I make progress.

That is awesome! I would love to see pictures if you have any. I have started the sanding on the axe head. One side is almost there. I will have lots of time this weekend to work though.

I had a little bit of a mishap with the axe head. I think I have fixed it though with a bit of two part water weld epoxy. It has been sanded back down smooth and I am ready to do another coat of primer to get it smooth. Next step is to figure out how to paint it and get that real metal look. Luckily I know a place with all kinds of tutorials.

I have made some more progress on Gimli's walking axe. The weather decided to cooperate for a little today and I got a few more coats of primer on the axe head. I did a little wet sanding as well and it is really smooth. There are still a few areas to touch up and add some more filler. Overall I am very happy with the progress and how it is coming along so far.

I have made some more progress on my 3d printed Gimli's walking axe. I added a coat of flat brown as a base.

Then I added some hammered metallic silver. I like the way it looks but I would kind of like to get it darker and maybe not so shiny. Get it to have a kind of used axe look to it.

I have a few more techniques that I'd like to try and see if I can get it to look more realistic.

I have done some more painting on the axe head. I used several different colors and brushed them on in layers to achieve a nice effect.

Of course I had to put the axe head into the handle and see how it looks. Next step is to work more on the handle.

I have done some more of the detailing work on Gimli's walking axe. I'm happy with how it looks. Now to mask the top and paint the shaft brown to look like wood.
