3D Printable Oscillation Overthruster

To say I'm a Buckaroo Banzai fanatic is an understatement. I recently rented an entire theater and showed the film on the big screen for all my friends. I'm that kind of fan.

I missed out on the resin cast Oscillation Overthrusters here at the RPF, but I was thrilled when Endiathetos offered one for sale. I'm now the proud owner of a really fantastic Overthruster replica - thanks to you all!

But I always wanted to make a 3D printable model too. Using the RPF model as a reference, I've now done just that. I used Tinkercad to design an Overthruster model which you can find here. It was very difficult to model. There are a lot of angles in there and some complex 3D shapes that are tough to model. But I managed to do a good approximation of it. I've also added the model to Thingiverse, including halves that are somewhat printable.

My next step is to modify the model for printing. I will likely remove the "accessories" like the screws and "pushers" and have them printed separately. But I haven't done that.

Right now I'm test-printing the Overthruster halves. We'll see how that goes and I'll report back here.

Thanks everyone!

I printed it in halves and didn't like that. The seam cuts right through the buttons on the side, and the natural curl of 3D printed objects makes them not fit together nicely.

So I printed it with supports as a whole. It's not perfect - I found some things I don't like - but it's pretty awesome anyway! Here are a few shots of the 3D printed Overthruster!

I've created a new model in four parts:
- The main body and most difficult side
- The remaining side decoration
- The brass "buttons"
- The black screws and "mushrooms"

Not it looks a lot better. Still not perfect, but it's printable!

I know this is a very old thread but I came across this file on thingiverse and wanted to thank the designer. A buddy of mine REALLY loves the movie it's his all time favorite. Well, he asked me before this pandemic if I knew where to get one, even a replica. I finally printed it and am nearly done with the piece. I will post pix when I am done. It is 3d printed and I made a few mistakes and instead of starting over i used those flaws to make it look like it was used as if we took it off the car AFTER it went through the mountain. I did take a few liberties. Thanks again.
