300 Rise of an Empire (Post-release)

It looks like the Spartans have been slacking on the abdominal workouts since we last saw them...no way they can win the war now!

no spartans in this one, just greeks (or close to none)
it features the battle of Thermopylae(which was between greek city states and persia), the battle of salamis, and possibly the battle of Marathon. sparta had nothing to do with either of those.

i mean they might cram some spartans in somewhere, but they shouldnt :)

I believe the Greeks form an alliance with the Spartans to take on Xerxes but I may be mistaken. It just won't be the same unless someone yells out "This is Sparta!".

Joking aside this is looking better than I thought it would although I'm not feeling any real need to see it in the theater.

Looking better and better! And it's gotta be rated R right?

Saw this Saturday night (pretty empty theater for opening weekend) and was pleasantly surprised. From all the trailers, especially those that centered solely on Artemisia, I was expecting nothing but to hate this movie. I thought 300 broke new ground, had a great style and look and was an interesting take on the story of Leonidas and his men. How can you do that again and not just retread old ground, or not fall far short of the original? However, 300: Rise of an Empire adds depth to the first film; encompassing the first movie by being both something of a prequel and a sequel. It covers battles both before, during and after the battle of Thermopylae (which 300 covers). While Rise of an Empire has the same sepia look as 300 it utterly lacked the style that 300 had. It also failed to capture the core feelings that 300 brought on, but then... maybe it isn't supposed to do so. What it did do is add a lot of depth and background to the 300 story, telling you more about what else was happening in Greece and how Sparta was viewed by other city-states. It also showed that Sparta wasn't the only people fighting against the Persian horde. Beyond that, Rise of an Empire does a GREAT job giving a background on the rise of Xerxes and how myth and legend are woven into history, creating a "god-king."

I greatly disliked that Artemisia was given a role much greater than she actually had and that for a battle involving thousands, the movie focused almost exclusively on her and Themistokles as if they had a private war going on between them. The real-life Artemisia ran like a dog and even attacked her own men during her retreat to save herself.

Overall, not a bad movie. It moved at a relatively quick pace and had a lot of interesting points, including two trips to Sparta. You will walk out of the movie, not likely to be able to name a single other Greek besides Themistokles as no one else is fleshed out like they were in 300, which is truly a shame as there was opportunity with several characters that was simply never fully realized.

The blood in 300 was stylized. The blood in Rise of an Empire reminds me of the cartoonish blood in Mortal Kombat games. It was more silly than shocking.

I wouldn't rush right out to see this, but it was cool to see the large naval battles on the big screen.

Man! I thought I was the only one that saw it! The wife and I, along with a few friends saw it this past Saturday. The theatre was packed like a sardine can, and I enjoyed it. I sort of groaned in some spots (Gorgo….), but enjoyed it. I especially liked the negotiation scene between Artemisia and Themistocles. HAH!! In the end, I can only second what Art posted.

The original 300 was way better.

This one seemed longer than it's actual running time.

Watch out for the Razzies.
Worst CGI blood.

Also watch out for the fireproof horse that can also leap 30ft out of water...
