Re: Y pattern
Thanks guys !
Julien, has your casting setup moved beyond pressure casting nowadays? I assume you still keep it simple, but the complexity of the castings you make seem complex.
Scott, I never used a pressure pot for casting, only vacuum chamber and that's at work or at my friend's shop.
I dont own one of this setup myself so I never use it for my own project, I don't feel the need to replicate ILM castings (haha), even if they used those setups at least on ROTJ and probably on ESB (but it does not show if they did on ESB, on ROTJ the casting quality has greatly improved).
For the engine plant-on, I did not make the mold like I would have liked (2 parts RTV molds with vents).
The master was very fragile (the thickness of the spots were the parts are glued together is 0.3mm) so I felt more comfortable to glue the whole master on a blank Saturn V can.
I only made one RTV mold to capture te details but no back because I used another blank Saturn V can for the molding process. Of course I used demolding agent so the castings do not bond to the plastic (castings are very delicate and fragile).
This way is not the best way to make casting because I had no vents, resin goes into an enclosed cavity so you can easily have airbubbles (and big ones !) trapped into the mold (see DaveG's thread when he tried to mold the canopy and the scoop without vents, he had that problem

).
It's a bit tricky with to not get airbubbles, the process needs a lot of care and some practice. Fortunatly enough I already made some molds like that in the past so I had no problem to get good result. I pulled 16 castings (more than needed) and I only had one casting with an airbubble in it. TBH it worked better than expected, I was expecting a lot more rejects !
The body will be a nightmare to cast will all those details on the side but they did it so I can do it !
Ouh you need to clear some space for your model,I don't mind to take care of your V2
Don
Haha Don,
Not sure you'd like it, I sanded the sides a lot (way too much, the walls are way to thin in some places now) to try to correct the shape. Unfortunatly I was not able to sand it more or I would have go through it. The sides were too much twisted on the V2, they are on the original, but not that much ! That's probably the most tricky place to nail on the cockpit.
