Does anyone know anything about the history of the helmet casting in this ended auction that might confirm the claims made in its description?

2001: SPACE ODYSSEY-PRODUCTION CAST SPACE HELMET+COA!

Helmet.gif

From auction description:

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968)!

*A RARE BEAUTY - THE FINEST SPACE HELMET EVER CRAFTED!

*THIS LOT IS FOR A VINTAGE AND ORIGINAL, PRODUCTION-MADE (NOT LATER PRODUCED), FIBERGLASS HELMET CASTING - THIS HELMET WOULD HAVE GONE FARTHER IN THE PRODUCTION PROCESS, BUT WAS NOT FINISHED FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER - NOTE THE PRODUCTION MARKINGS INSIDE HELMET / THESE WERE PERHAPS MARKINGS FOR THE EVENTUAL ADDING OF INTERIOR PADDING AND PARTS - A GREAT PIECE - BEAUTIFUL DESIGN!

*THIS HELMET CAME ORIGINALLY FROM GREG JEIN, WHO MADE THE HELMETS FOR 2010 - THIS HELMET HAS HAD THE BACK PANELS ADDED TO THE ORIGINAL CASTING - SO IT IS MORE COMPLETE THAN JUST THE STRAIGHT 2001 PULL WITH THE BLANK BACK - THIS IS WHY THIS HELMET APPEARS SIMILAR TO A CASTING OF THE 2010 HELMET, WHICH HAD THE BACK PANELS MOLDED INTO THE DESIGN - THIS IS A GUARANTEED VINTAGE AND ORIGINAL HELMET FROM 2001 - BID WITH CONFIDENCE AND ENJOY!

*GUARANTEED VINTAGE AND ORIGINAL TO PRODUCTION!

*OVERALL VERY FINE CONDITION!

*COMES WITH COA FROM THE MUSEUM OF MOM AND POP CULTURE!

*REGARDING PROVENANCE: THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF FAKE MATERIAL IN THE MARKETPLACE – AND WE DO OUR BEST TO THOROUGHLY RESEARCH EACH PIECE WE SELL. WE ALWAYS FULLY DISCLOSE WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT ANY ITEM THAT WE SELL. WE ALSO ISSUE COA’S WHEN WE ARE TOTALLY SURE OF AN ITEM’S PROVENANCE. HAVING BEEN A COLLECTOR OF MOVIE MEMORABILIA SINCE 1957, I WROTE THE FIRST BOOK ON SCI-FI AND HORROR MOVIE POSTERS AND FOUNDED THE ARCHIVES AT 20TH CENTURY FOX, RUNNING THAT DEPARTMENT FOR 10 YEARS AND CURATING THE FIRST FOX MUSEUM IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA. I DON’T KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT PROPS, WARDROBE, AND PRODUCTION ART – NO ONE DOES – BUT WHEN YOU BUY FROM ME AND THE MUSEUM OF MOM AND POP CULTURE, WE GUARANTEE THE MATERIAL WE SELL TO BE AUTHENTIC, VINTAGE AND AS DESCRIBED. BID WITH CONFIDENCE AND ENJOY!

I understand that it was owned by Ron Magrid, who got it from Greg Jein.

Oddly enough, I just saw Ron this morning. I called him up and he confirmed the story - an unfinished casting from 2001, obtained by Greg around the time 2010 was going into production. Greg added the back pieces using surplus 2010 parts and later passed it on to Ron.

Neat to know that this stuff still gets out and the stories cam be traced back and confirmed.

What an awesome piece/find. You're right, that seller has some terrific items.

The guys name is Alan Adler. I met him once when we both worked for 20th Century Fox. Seemed like a nice enough guy. I've bought a couple of things from him via Ebay and all was well with the item and the transaction. Ron Magid has been selling some of his stuff through him, and Ron's been collecting stuff for years........

Thanks, GKvfx, for more interesting info. When you spoke with Ron Magid, did he say why he decided to let the helmet go?

BTW - This has reawakened my interest in the 2001 helmet. I have scoured the web and the RPF for pics of details and information. Does anyone here have pics of the original helmets from exhibitions, etc.? HD caps would be nice too.

He has a raw casting 2001 backpack on Ebay as well.

No Problem! I have the 'cooliris' picture viewer plug-in for firefox and spent a mesmerising evening looking at these fantastic shots. I'd highly recommend giving it a go.

One of these suits would definitely be a grail replica for me.. Gotta get that lottery win first though.

Re: Anyone Have Info on This 2001: A Space Odyssey Helmet Casting? (eBay)

I saw the backpack, Richie. I wondered how close its dimensions are to those used on screen.

Thanks for the Blu Ray link, skiffy. There aren't many good helmet detail shots, but it's a great overall collection.

It's great that every now and then some old timers let a little gold go from their collections!
