Re: 1/2 studio scale Offworld Blimp - MOVING AHEAD!

We have to stop there again... and I NEED a Sonic Cherry Limeade. Seriously. The closest Sonic is still a good hour and a half away from Baltimore. They're coming to our area "soon"...

Bastiches. I'll believe Sonic comes here when I SEE them!!

Cherry Limeade........*drool*.......

Wow Jason!,

That assembled version of the Blimp Buck looks great!
Nice Work.
I can't wait to see how the vacumme-form "pulls" come out.

Also for anyone who can't get enough info and pics on cool projects like this;

here are a few of the CNC milling for the (half) fuselage of the Blimp.
This is backtracking a bit from MoffEaton's last posts/pics

Inciddently, this was a learning experience for me, I've done mill work ages ago but this is my first at CNC milling.
Much ThanKs to Mike Huggins at PCS with out whose help and generosity we couldn't have gotten this done.
Shamelss Plug: :rolleyes
Check out PCS at cadca4u.com or pcsenginc.com.
They can do several types of Rapid-Prototyping:
3D-printing/Stereolithography as well as CNC milling

The first Image is a "break-down" of the Half-Fuselage into pieces small enough to accomodate the size of the CNC mill/table.

Re: 1/2 studio scale Offworld Blimp - MOVING AHEAD!

Thes Pics show the ureathane foam billing milled.

The first shape has had its final pass the second shape just has the first
"rough" pass.
We kept this simple and did all the milling with a .25 inch Square mill.

For "tighter" work it's possble to change to different sizes and types of bits.
This was a fairly "soft" and rounded-organic shape so it wasn't necesssary.

This is 240 density urethane foam... light-wieght but very strong , and heat resistant.
Perfect for this "organic" shape and for use in Thermal Vacuume forming.
A lot cheaper than using, much more high-density urethanes such as Renshape.
Though materials like "renshape" could have been used ..taking roughly the same amount of time to mill.

Re: 1/2 studio scale Offworld Blimp - MOVING AHEAD!

This picture shows some of the parts crudley placed together.
The excess material still needs to be trimmed away.

The piece you see with the pegs still need to be milled on the "back side"
The pegs and holes are for registration purposes and will eventually removed.

This was done with a 3-Axis CNC Mill; it can not do undercuts, unless the parts are re-oreiented (in this case "flipped over" 180 degrees).

Mike Huggine as PCS will be getting a large 5-Axis CNC/Mill early this June...whoo hoo!
That means much more complicated and larger pieces can be milled!
I'm thinking full-sized SF3d/MaK & Powered-Armor projects are in my future!

The pieces were made with a .375" "overage" to allow for some "trim/edge" and attachment tabs for glueing the two peices of vacuume formed plastic together

Hope you don't mind the extra info and pics

Cheers, M

I kid because I love.

But seriously - WF is always better with you around.

Me? Or the magic laptop? :rolleyes

Wouldn't miss it.

I tried to talk Kozicki into going, but having never experienced the goodness of the muffins he doesn't know what he's missing.

Yeah, well, you know what happened the last time we went to WF together:
attachment.php

.... I don't know if Scot has recovered.......

You, Gene. I enjoy the social aspect more than the gear some times. Nothing magical about a PC laptop to me, by the way :rolleyes

Zing!

Re: 1/2 studio scale Offworld Blimp - MOVING AHEAD!

Great pics! That thing is looking fab. Will the etched brass bits be, er, etched brass?

I'm thinking full-sized SF3d/MaK & Powered-Armor projects are in my future!

Keep us informed! I think I still have 1:1 SAFS MkIII gun arm and periscope blanks somewhere around, but they were only mockups - about as far as that project ever got.

Re: 1/2 studio scale Offworld Blimp - MOVING AHEAD!

Yep - will etch the brass! Well... I'll send out to have it done.

I have a lead on a fella who has a sheet of unused brass from the production - he has Hades buildings and blimp crane/antennas!! Am trying to get him to scan it for me so I can redraw/shrink to half scale.

Re: 1/2 studio scale Offworld Blimp - MOVING AHEAD!

That would be beyond aweseome. I recall seeing pics around the web of various unused brass sheets from BR. I don't suppose he has any Tyrell Pyramid frets too by any chance? I have a CG model WIP, which I want to be as accurate as I can manage. The film itself provides good reference but it's still a shame there aren't better model shots in the public domain, especially given that the model didn't survive.

But I digress! :D

Re: 1/2 studio scale Offworld Blimp - MOVING AHEAD!

Well, here's irony for you. Turns out I will have the weekend off. Our company is moving into a new building, and except for the IT guys, we all get a 4 day weekend. Looked into last minute airfares, but I didn't see any of those great deals that they say are out there. So it looks like I'll still be stuck here.

Dang!!
Well, here's hoping you find cheapie seats and show up as a surprise!

Re: 1/2 studio scale Offworld Blimp - MOVING AHEAD!

Get behind the wheel and Drive!

It's only 2/3rds the way, across the country... it's not like it's all the way! ;)

hope you can find a way to make it...

We got a spare bed/room waitin' for ya

Re: 1/2 studio scale Offworld Blimp - MOVING AHEAD!

I had to hand-tweak the pattern some, to get it ever closer to the references....

It is now DONE and boxed, to be sent for vac-forming! From there, I will take the shells and make a master to be rotocast in resin.

From here on out, things will get really cool...

Re: 1/2 studio scale Offworld Blimp - MOVING AHEAD!

Very Awesome Moff!!

Even with my brain literally coming apart on me, it's good to know that I haven't gotten lost on everything.
I just hope that my recovery from surgery gives me some time to work on this piece!
