1:18 scale scratch build - THE BAT - The Dark Knight Rises

I've been working on scaled figures and dioramas for some time now - but I haven't gotten around to working on a scratch build of a vehicle. Simply haven't found the right inspiration to get me started on one...that is untill I saw the new Dark Knight film the other night.

A 1:18 scale build. Currently I am using sheet styrene - black. Sculpted/cast material will be involved. I hope to add a number is effects to this piece including working LED lighting, motor spin effects for the rotors and intake as well as sound effects. Not sure how much of these special add ons will come to fruition since I am a novice at wiring LEDs and Motors and am not sure if my sound theory will work.

I have accumulated about every image you can find on the internet of this thing which includes screen shots from youtube as well as trailers. I've got both production books - so I think reference wise I'm off to a good start. :)

Couple questions I have to any that may be able to answer - The canopy for the co-pilot...How do you think it opens? I think it slides forward. Secondly - does the pilot's HUD panels tilt and move forward when the main canopy opens? Curious.

Anyway - Hope you enjoy the images of my work up to this point. Comments and suggestions are welcome :) Thanks!

Got to admit that I wasn't a fan of the bat, but WOW this looks like that start of an AMAZING build. Congrats so far :thumbsup

the front of the cockpit (display area) did move forward in the movie when the hatch was opened and retracted when the hatch closed IE the scene with batman and gordon at the end.

Absolutely love this and it looks like your off to an excellent start. The blueprint you have is amazing. I wanted to build this recently but I could not find enough good reference material to build a blueprint. Would you be willing to share the blueprint or reference material?

Oh no no no - That blueprint is not mine - source comes as an insert from the new book - The Dark Knight Manual. I'll be happy to scan it and email a copy to those who need it - I suggest buying this book - very cool! :)

Hi. i am very interested in the blue print of the bat.
i was hoping that you would be kind enough to scan a copy for me.
i wanted to build the bat just for the fun of it.

I did actually design a mount and arm for the i max camera to get traveling shot but it was never used. we made 2 Bats and the brief was it had to mount to the car (built by the US team, very good) fly down wires . fit in the back of a truck and fit in an elevator to get to the roof of the sky scraper in NY. so the hole thing was dismantled for each set up. We got quite good at it :)DSC00462.JPGF-B-I max arm.jpg
