1:15 Railroad Delorean Time Machine

I am soon going to purchase the railway ready time machine from Diamond Select but wanted to see if there are any "stock" railroad pieces that would be compatable with the wheels of the car. I'm not too familiar with model train scales, so perhaps we have someone here that can point me in the right direction.

Nothing standard. The closest is a live steam scale, but live steam locos are very tempermental and mostly run outdoors. It's not a common scale - and even so, it's 1:16, not 1:15.

Ok, what about the Sunstar die-cast cars? I forget what the scale is for those, but it would be fun to put one on a model train set...
In any case, I would have to custom build a run of track for the DS car. I also want to rework some of the details on the car - like the cables and wires and stuff to make it look less like a toy and more like a studio model.

O Gauge is 1:48, HO is 1:87 - those are going to be the most readily available, and those are gonna be pretty tiny. You'd be better off scratch-building track. It's not exactly difficult - two opposite rails, one positive, one negative - but you'd have to know what you're doing. Talk to model railroaders near you, but finding something 1:15 is going to be expensive.

The Sun Stars were 1:18, I believe. I still have my 1:18 bit of track, sitting unused.

As far as I know, G-scale is the biggest "standard" scale track you can get. Here is a length of G-scale with, from L-R, a 1:15th DST, a 1:18th Sunstar, and a 1:43rd Minichamps.

I have heard that G-scale can "work" with 1:24 and a I do have a 1:24 DeLorean but couldn't find it for the photo comparison.

If you could face the effort, though, you could buy G-scale track and just make new sleepers for it to fit the 1:15th car. The wheels and the track seem to work ok. If you're going for a diorama thing, just gut the G-scale in half and dress the gaps with gravel or stone :)

Looking forward to seeing progress on this. One of my favorite Sci-fi ground vehicles.:thumbsup

Well, If you can get a 1:24 (1:25) scale model of "The General" maybe you can modify it to match the 1:24 delorean? I built mine a while back.. (didn't make it accurate though) :unsure

Use "live-steam" scale rail if you can find it. Cut custom wood ties if the Live steam scaled ties are not available or if the 1/16 difference in scale bothers you, and use the appropriate spikes to hold the rail in place. You will need to ballast it anyway with the largest scale ballast available: try scenicexpress.com for that.

Whoa, that is a much bigger difference between the 1:15 and the 1:18 scales.

Out of them all, the 1:24th is better. Why? Because the 1:24th is nice kit with inaccuracies that are acceptable for the scale. However the Sunstar 1:18th is based on how the cars are now rather than were, and so have a LOT of errors on them and have a very sparse rear deck. They also "traced" some detailing off the 1:24th which when blown up to 1:18th, doesn't look so hot. The 1:18th's DeLorean profile isn't great, either. Unfortunately the 1:15th is a direct retrace of the 1:18th model, with poor detailing, wrong DeLorean profile, etc.. it has a lot of issues.

The 1:24th is the Aoshima/AMT/Halcyon kit and is the best of the lot. Polar Lights reissued it with a slightly dumbed-down finish as a snap-together kit, and Welly sort of it re-issued it as a diecast (diecast body with remoulded model kit parts). It's not great. So if you can get the original 1:24th model kits, they're the nicest ones to go for.

And getting to the point, here is my 1:24th on G scale track:

You can get these with the railroad wheels but it would still need some modding to fit. You'd need to trim the axles back by about 5mm on each side. However it's going to be your best fit with an existing model railway.

Hope all that helps!

Gday everyone.
I'm looking to buy this 1:15 model. I have a 5" gauge miniature railway around my house where I run 1:12 scale trains and rollingstock. I am also a huge BTTF fan and got real excited when I saw this on eBay. The track I have is 5" apart or 127mm. EBay listing states the car is 150mm wide. If one of the members here have one of the 1:15 models could they measure the distance between the wheels.
Thankyou
Zomer

It was MANY years of thinking about this... and I finally did it this weekend... SO COOL that the model, right out of the box, fit the track.

This is the Diamond Select Back to the Future III "rail-ready" Time Machine (www.bit.ly/1MQw9z1) on real 1" scale track.

i've tried a 1/25 scale delorean and G scale train/track. the track is way narrower than the delorean. I figure the only way i can fix it is to widen the track and train to match the delorean (since the delorean wouldn't look right narrowed). It's a Bachmann G scale 4-6-0. Car is Aoshima.
