Looks realy great!

Will you mount the light bulb with this cardstock tube permanently? I'd fear that it catches fire at some time... And will you switch to a cooler light temperature at a later point?

Agreed , with that wattage the heat energy is too much for cardboard , get light metal tubing , unless you change to an LED bulb, even still the effort your putting into this I would do the same with heat shielding , biscuit tin metal makes an easy surround, can be cut with strong scissors.

Hmm. The bulb used IS LED.
And he thought of using a dimmer.
So I think he will be OK.

OK, Calm down kids

It's not really 1,000,000 watts

It's just so bright that it feels like that

Those pix were taken with 1/4000 th shutter speed

IT is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO friggin bright

And LED

Plugged her in for about 6 hours

Hot -ish, ..... BUT, not "spontanious combust" hot.

but will be dimming,

and adding a few blue regular LEDs around the spot, for regular use and saving the 1,000,000 watter for the grand finally show stopping number thingy

the buicuit tin idea is excellent though, i have access to 0.005" shim material, being a machinist, which would also work

To be honest

I was really suprised how cool the 1,000,000 watter stayed

$17 each at local super market

Started work on the engine internals, basically a hinge mechanism to achieve the slight "in toe" it adopts when landed because i do plan to have both, "in flight" and "landed" options.

first i oval'd out the inner wall opening

Fiddled until i got the angle looking right and attached the location sleeve

Made top and bottom rings and spacers

X four

Two left, two right.

Dry fit
Straight

Angled

Prep the bottom of the outer ring

Outer support wall gluing

X four

With shafts

Complete assembly
Bulb holder and support ring

Rotating hinge

Inner wall

Outer wall

Dry fit with dome master as stand in

Engine pivot assembly

In position in the arm

Started on November 1st 2014
Have an all day session planned for saturday, my wife is busy all day.
hope to have all engines attached by next time

Just curious. When connecting all the engines, will you be utilizing any type of rhombus linkage to maintain the equi-quadrilateral movement per the movie ... or keep each engine on a separate pivot and just spin the dang things when you want to change the config?

Fantastic ! I haven't been on in a while.....great to see you rolling again ! I recently completed my scratch built mech warrior. (still posting progress pic's) I'm definitely a much better painter than a builder.... I wish I had your engineering skills to go with my artistic side. It's rare to have both skills, but I think you're one of the lucky few.
