Hey peeps....a post on the forum has got me interested about the mpc x wing kit. I had one of these 30 years ago (yes I'm that old) and I need your help to tell me where to get one?

Are the MPC kits too old and not available?.. I checked ebay and they are $90?......Is that the right price?....Is there a better model/price available?

I'm not price sensitive, just need some advice about getting a good solid build kit....don't want a toy out of a box....I like the mpc X Wing kit, so please advise.

thx

It may be my opinon but after almost 40 years of modeling I would say that's an informed opinon. $90 is a scalpers price. I've checked Ebay and I can see quite a few for far less than that, one even at $21 USD. If you try over at Starship Modeler you might get one for the price you are want.

AS others have said, I wouldn't pay more than $30 for the old MPC kit. Be careful on EBay though. There is also the the snap version which is smaller and horrible detail wise. Do not get any that say "Snap Tite" or "It's a Snap!" http://images.productwiki.com/upload/images/mpc_star_wars_x_wing_fighter-400-400.jpg

There are many different releases of the original. Some under MPC, others under AMT/MPC/ERTL etc.. They are all the same model, however, later versions did not include a pilot figure (not that the pilot figure looked like an X-wing pilot anyway).

The earliest packaging looks like this.

These usually go for more money mostly due to the box art being in good condition rather than the contents of the box
Also I know for sure this release has the "pilot" figure

Ones with this packaging are usually cheaper. Not sure if they ditched the pilot in this release
http://www.scalemates.com/products/...?nr=8918&company=mpc/ertl&name=x-wing fighter

This is another repackage that you'll probably get cheaper than the one with the older box art
http://www.scalemates.com/products/...nr=38366&company=amt/ertl&name=x-wing fighter

Some versions have a flight display which is basically just a round piece of plastic you stick the model in so you can rotate all different angles. http://www.starwarsmodels.com/images/boxes/xwingfd.jpg

Others have a "pro-plus" package which is just a set of useless paint pots added in and a crappy paint brush and a testors glue tube. This version has no pilot

Here's a great site that shows the time line of all the various repackaging of this model.

This is great info, thanks for sharing.

Just with this kit though even though it's the kit you are wanting the kit on the box is actually the snap together version. Now that's an EPIC FAIL.

Cool man, I just got another few as well, but I'll be modifying these a little bit more than my last one. Specifically the massive gaps in the inner wings.

Make sure you get the 1:48 scale version. The small snap version is horrible! I would not pay more than $15 - $20 for the bigger kit. I have a new one in progress as well as my already built original that will be getting an upgrade. One major modification and lots of minor ones are in store for the new one. :D

RT, check out this site, Star Wars Models (use the GALLERY link on the side...) to see a pretty complete and comprehensive listing of nearly all the STAR WARS related models, including figures (from plastic to resin, etc.) Not only does he list the kits, but the scales and his notes regarding building, etc.

If you are still looking for one, I have an excess of AMT/MPC/ERTL X-Wings in my stash; in fact, I just picked up another one as part of a combo deal with an AMT TIE fighter kit that I was planning on re-bouncing; send me a PM if you might be interested (as in make me a fair offer.) I live in Virginia, so shipping would be reasonable.

Regards, Robert

The original MPC X-Wing kit has been offered for so long that it is pretty easy to come up with one for a very inexpensive price. Only reason why one might pay a high price for one would be due to the box art more than the contents of the kit itself, unless of course somebody found one of the very first early production kits which had raised panel lines instead of recessed ones (I didn't believe such a kit existed until I saw images of it not too long ago). Some of the internationally issued versions are also fun to collect, but again they shouldn't command that high a price.

Of the boxings I have found, they include:

Star Wars large box (early production offerings for about the first year or so)
Star Was small box (same kit, smaller sized box to allow more to fit on store shelves)
Star Wars small box with Empire Strikes Back sticker on it (1980-81 timeframe)
Return of the Jedi box (with "Golden Opportunity kit tokens on the side of the box)
Return of the Jedi MPC/Ertl box
AMT/Ertl Flight Display base boxing (kit has an acrylic disk display stand)
AMT/Ertl kit with paint and glue (nice box art by H. Ed Cox, the paint and glue are pretty much worthless)
AMT/Ertl kit from its final issue (which somebody has pointed out may have the snap X-Wing on the box)

To me, the kit is a nice trip down memory lane. Sure, we have much better X-Wing kits now. But this one was not bad for late 1970s molding technology. Looking at some of the tells on the model, it seems as though MPC had access to pictures of the original studio models (or a model itself), especially since the cockpit and "biker" pilot figure are so heavily based on the models and not the full size set pieces or costumes. Some of the smaller features are simplified, but it became something of a badge of honor for an SF modeler to build an MPC X-Wing and make it better than the original kit contents. Another nice tidbit is the MPC kit is the ONLY X-wing kit to also go full circle and be used as a studio model as a couple were photographed in Return of the Jedi (obvious to see in the Rebel fleet hyperspace exit scene).
