Hi Gang,
I just want to thank everybody for your kind words! Your support, opinions and guidance throughout the build has been unwavering and appreciated and I truly thank you all. This was a total team effort and I could not have pulled it off without the most amazing and talented fans ever! They deserve most of the credit. The best part... we haven't even scratched the surface!
OK... So... Why the stand alone prop? During one of the team meetings it was discussed that we redesign and rebuild the center console from scratch. Since we now had access to the lab it made more sense to go back and correct the errors while adding lights and sounds. Also, while getting folks to sit in the cockpit and sign the console is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of the build, the signatures did in fact take away (just a little) from the screen accuracy (don't get me wrong - I LOVE the signatures). So what do we do with console "Generation 1.0"?
It didn't make sense just to toss Gen 1.0 in the dumpster - that would be silly and painful. The decision was made to strip Gen 1.0 down to nothing (as you just witnessed) and use "her" as a test bed for the electronics and we would lean toward the ESB design. As a result, "Gen 1.5" was born. When finished, she would be a fully functional and interactive stand alone prop for smaller shows and venues and NOW have a proper place for signatures. It made total sense.
With Gen 1.5 "behind us" (still some minor tweaking to do) Gen 2.0 will be a near exact replica of Gen 1.5 but will be designed and built using the CNC, laser cutter, vinyl cutter (for pinstripes), and 3D printer. Gen 2.0 will sit in the cockpit and preserve the authenticity/screen accuracy while her sister console sits outside receiving the signatures and attention she deserves.
Console Gen 1.0
Gen 1.5
Gen 2.0
???
I hope all that made sense.
Jake and I have been discussing how we move forward with the build. With SW Celebration only a "short" year away there are several directions to take with the cockpit - remember, we have 2000+ LEDs for the cockpit. Not to forget the radar scope, the sliders and the vertical gauges... 2014 is definitely going to be a heck of a ride... This is where the fun begins...
Right now, I'm looking forward to our new home and getting my garage back!
More to Follow! And thanks again to everybody!
